Job Title: Duty Manager/Fitness Instructor

Office Location: National Badminton Centre, Milton Keynes

Salary: £27,000

Hours: 37.5, permanent (shifts include evenings, weekends and holidays)


Role Summary:

Duty Manager/Fitness Instructors are responsible for providing a safe andwelcoming environment for all visitors to the NBC – from Olympic athletes and Badminton England staff to lodge guests, museum visitors and club members using out fitness facilities. This role requires someone who is willing to working morning and evening shifts during both the week and weekends, beadaptable, customer-focused and able to work both independently and as a part of a team, while providing an excellent fitness experience and ensuring the smooth running and safety of the centre. The role also includes ensuring Health and Safety guidelines are followed and compliance records are maintained.

Main Responsibilities:

Customer Service and Member Engagement

  • Act as an ambassador for Badminton England and the National Badminton Centre (NBC), promoting our values and delivering a positive brand experience for all visitors – including Olympic athletes, gym and badminton members, hotel lodge guests, museum visitors and staff.
  • Maintain high visibility in all areas of the centre, particularly within fitness spaces, engaging with customers in a professional and positive manner that fosters achievement of individual fitness goals.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all users, motivating members to reach their fitness goals and maintain a healthier lifestyle through tools such as Myzone and Egym.
  • Conduct gym consultations, inductions (including junior inductions) and create tailored fitness plans and managing records and administration to track progress
  • Support membership sales by conducting facility tours, understanding customer goals and aligning these with available services.

Operational & Facility Management

  • Oversee day‑to‑day operations of the NBC, ensuring smooth functioning of both fitness and wider centre facilities.
  • Act as a key holder, responsible for opening and closing the centre on a shift basis.
  • Carry out daily operational and cleaning tasks, including gym and facility checks via OpsPal, as well as weekly equipment inspections and reporting faults to management.
  • Coordinate with maintenance staff to ensure facilities are safe, well maintained and any repairs are escalated promptly.

Financial & Administrative Tasks

  • Support daily financial responsibilities such as processing transactions, bookings and maintaining accurate records.
  • Assist with membership sales, including onboarding and ensuring customer data is correctly recorded.
  • Identify opportunities for cost efficiencies without compromising quality or member experience.

Staff Coordination

  • Coordinate and support team members on shift (housekeeping, reception, fitness), ensuring smooth handovers and effective teamwork.
  • Lead by example in delivering high standards of customer service and operational performance.
  • Oversee contractors, ensuring compliance with permits to work and adherence to quality standards.

Compliance, Safety & Health Standards

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations across all areas of the building and fitness facilities.
  • Complete and record regular health and safety checks, escalating any concerns appropriately.
  • Maintain emergency readiness, assisting in building evacuations when required.
  • Provide first aid and complete accident/incident reports in line with centre procedures.

Communication & Community Engagement

  • Contribute to clear handovers and regular communication with senior management regarding operations and fitness services.
  • Handle customer complaints and operational challenges professionally and proactively.
  • Collaborate with the Fitness & Rackets Manager and wider team to plan events and initiatives that promote community engagement and enhance member experience.

Who are we looking for?
