Design & Technology Technician - Secondary School (DT Department)
Location: Northampton
Start Date: September 2025
Salary: 22,914 - 24,430

Are you practical, creative, and passionate about design and engineering? Do you enjoy working with tools, machinery, and young people in a hands-on learning environment? Secondary schools in Northampton are seeking a reliable and skilled Design & Technology Technician to join their DT departments this September.

This is a full-time, term-time only position-ideal for someone with a background in carpentry, construction, manufacturing, or engineering who wants to support the next generation of designers, engineers, and innovators.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up and maintain tools, materials, and equipment for DT lessons, ensuring everything is safe, organised, and ready for use

  • Support teachers and students during practical sessions, offering guidance and demonstrations on machinery and processes

  • Carry out routine maintenance and safety checks on machinery and tools in line with H&S standards

  • Manage stock levels, order resources, and track inventory for the department

  • Assist with displays, exhibitions, and practical assessments to showcase student work

  • Support in the preparation of lesson resources and administrative tasks

  • Promote a safe, efficient, and engaging workshop environment for students aged 11-18

What We're Looking For:

  • Practical experience with tools and equipment used in design and manufacturing (woodwork, metalwork, CAD/CAM, etc.)

  • A strong understanding of workshop health and safety practices

  • Good organisational and time-management skills

  • A team player with strong communication skills and a proactive attitude

  • Experience working with young people or in a school/college setting is beneficial (but not essential)

  • Willingness to complete relevant training (e.g. First Aid, Health & Safety, COSHH)
