Background in Sterile Services

Job description

Are you enthusiastic, self-motivated, flexible, reliable, and well-organised? Can you work equally well independently or as part of a team? Are you able to use your own initiative to solve day-to-day problems? Then consider joining the friendly and hardworking team in the Decontamination Services Department (DSD).

Are you passionate about patient safety and interested in working for a high-quality decontamination services department at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust that delivers excellent patient care?

Would you like to develop your knowledge in the decontamination and sterilisation of surgical instruments?

The Decontamination Services Department (DSD) provides sterile services to five hospitals within the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. The department operates to the highest standards and is accredited to Medical Device European Directive 93/42/EEC and ISO 13485:2016. It is located in a large, state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility on the Oxford Road Site.

As a DSD Technician, you will undertake the decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilisation, and distribution of medical devices (surgical instruments) for operating theatres and departments across the Oxford Road site, as well as to external customers. You will ensure that the service is provided efficiently and in accordance with the department's policies, procedures, and Quality Management System.

No specific qualifications are required; a background in sterile services would be useful but is not essential, as we provide comprehensive induction and ongoing training. You should be reasonably fit, as the role involves manual handling, walking, and standing activities. You must be able to follow procedures in a production environment, have effective communication skills, a conscientious and methodical approach to work, and the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is one of the largest NHS Trusts in England, with a turnover of £2.8 billion. We are creating an integrated health and social care system for the 1 million patients who rely on our services annually.

We bring together 10 hospitals and community services across Manchester, Trafford, and beyond, promoting collaborative working and transformation. Our 30,000-strong workforce is encouraged to pursue ambitious goals. We set standards that other trusts aspire to emulate, offering a scale of opportunity that is extraordinary.

We have introduced Hive, our electronic patient record system launched in September 2022, to improve clinical quality, patient and staff experience, operational effectiveness, and promote research and innovation.

As a major academic research and education provider, we support high-quality research programs. We are also committed to sustainability through our Green Plan, which outlines how MFT continues to make healthcare more sustainable.

At MFT, we foster a culture of inclusion and belonging, provide equal career development opportunities, and prioritize health and wellbeing, shaping the future of our organization together.
