Job description

Drosophila Geneticist

Contract Duration: Initially 2 Years

Our client is seeking a passionate and dedicated Drosophila Geneticist to join their dynamic Invertebrate Genetics team within the Bioscience department. This exciting opportunity is centred around pioneering research aimed at enhancing the development and understanding of innovative insecticides, utilising the model species Drosophila melanogaster.

About the Role

As a lab-based scientist, the successful candidate will leverage molecular genetic tools to support the insecticide discovery pipeline. A core component of this role involves enhancing capabilities to genetically validate potential insecticide targets and subsequently deploying these tools in non-model agricultural pests. An enthusiasm for working beyond model species is highly encouraged.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the project lead to assess and implement molecular-genetic technologies for modulating potential insecticide targets.
  • Execute experiments to bolster insecticide projects and programmes.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of strategic project goals.
  • Communicate experimental outcomes effectively with stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of the invertebrate molecular laboratory, adapting to current business priorities.
  • Assist with routine stock maintenance and compound screening activities.
  • Tackle scientific challenges and produce high-quality data to facilitate project objectives.
  • Document experiments and test results, contributing to reports and recommending follow-up actions.
  • Uphold high standards of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) compliance, including adherence to risk assessments and reporting safety incidents.
Experience & Skills Required
  • A degree or MSc in a relevant science discipline is essential.
  • Proven experience in a lab-based role is required.
  • Strong knowledge of molecular genetic techniques is essential.
  • Familiarity with Drosophila melanogaster is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Exceptional organisational skills and meticulous note-keeping abilities.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and influence colleagues.
