Job summary

DVSA is seeking a Driver Training Specialist to deliver high‑quality training to new Driving Examiners across multiple locations, including Glasgow. You will foster a supportive learning environment, recognise different learning styles and provide constructive feedback to help delegates reach their potential.

The role offers Training through three stages, with progression based on successful completion. You must maintain a valid UK/EU driving licence and work toward required qualifications.

  • Knowledge of training methods, learning techniques and classroom delivery.
  • Ability to tailor communication to individual needs and learning styles.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills for team and independent work.

  • Experience coaching and mentoring others.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver learning products meeting L&D standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain integrity and quality of learning materials per L&D standards.
  • Ensure accurate handover to the business for ongoing development.
  • Collaborate with L&D and People & Places Directorate teams to foster a shared vision.
  • Interact with external delivery partners as needed within DVSA/L&D standards.

Driver Training Specialist

Location: Avonmouth, Birmingham (Garretts Green), Cambridge, Chadderton, Gillingham (Kent), Glasgow (Bishopbriggs), Newcastle-upon-Tyne (Gosforth), Slough.

Salary: £30,485 (An allowance of £5,000 per year is payable, once you are fully qualified as a trainer.)

Job description

You will deliver quality learning to new Driving Examiners, creating a nurturing environment for delegates to reach their full potential by recognising learning styles, providing support and feedback.

Your responsibilities will include, but aren t limited to:

  • Delivering learning products that meet Learning & Development (L&D) standards, policy, Quality Assurance processes, corporate and regulatory requirements.
  • Upkeeping the integrity and quality of learning products in alignment with L&D standards and policy.
  • Ensuring accurate completion of handover to the business to enable continuous development where relevant.
  • Collaborating with L&D and wider People & Places Directorate colleagues to foster a team ethos to bring L&D and the People & Places Directorate vision to life.
  • Interacting with external delivery partners as required in alignment with DVSA and L&D standards.
What DVSA requires from you

To train driving examiner candidates, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be willing to work towards building and maintaining relevant experience in driving test delivery and examiner training
  • Be able to communicate clearly and calmly, even in complex situations
  • Be able to deliver feedback constructively that others can act on to improve their performance
  • Able to use judgement to make effective decisions
  • Give accurate, objective and supportive feedback to improve trainees' performance
  • Reflect on your own practice and keep your skills up to date as standards, policy and guidance change.

We will train you!

Training for this position will be made up of 3 parts.

  • Part 1 is Driving Examiner training
  • Part 2 is delivering tests and working from your local driving test centre
  • Part 3 will be our Training for Trainers course

You must be successful at each stage to progress to the next stage. The Driving Examiner training is pass/fail and your employment will cease if you do not pass. If you are unable to successfully complete the Training the Trainer course within a reasonable timeframe, you may be offered a permanent contract as a Driving Examiner. Parts 2 and 3 are based on continuous improvement, not a pass/fail assessment. We will strive to help you succeed in post.

Person specification

You must have held full Category B UK or EU licence continuously for the last 3 years and must have no more than 3 penalty points.

You will be required to provide evidence that you hold any essential qualifications/licenses at some point during the recruitment process. If you cannot provide evidence, your application will be withdrawn.

If you do not already hold the qualifications below, you will be expected to work towards them once in post as part of your training:

  • Authorised by the Secretary of State to conduct the official Category B Driving Test (Examiner Warrant Card)
  • Approved Driving Instruction (Green Certificate)
