About This Position

Behind-the-wheel instructors conduct driving lessons for students (primarily ages 15-17) with varied levels of experience. This position involves driving in real-time in a driver's education training car equipped with a passenger side brake pedal. Scheduling is flexible, and lessons are scheduled daily and weekly without guaranteed numbers. The role is part-time, including weekends, with both daylight and night driving hours required.

General Duties

  • Provide driving instruction to promote safe and responsible driving habits among students
  • Follow the PLAYBOOK curriculum and flow chart as outlined by the program
  • Learn and understand the provided drive routes; familiarity with Canby is helpful
  • Represent the Canby School District Driver Education Program professionally
  • Maintain the training cars in neat condition and report mechanical issues promptly
  • Refuel the vehicle at the end of each shift
  • Communicate areas of improvement to students and families for practice at home
  • Complete drive assessment documentation for each student after sessions
  • Coordinate effectively with the Driver Education coordinator
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the coordinator

Qualifications

  • Residency in Oregon; valid Oregon driver's license for at least five years with a clean record
  • Access to a cell phone
  • Age 21 or older
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain it
  • Successful criminal background check
  • Ability to drive in all weather conditions, day and night

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods
  • Lift 20-30 lbs of equipment/cones as needed
  • Ability to get in and out of the vehicle multiple times daily, react quickly in emergencies, and operate the instructor brake properly

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current Oregon traffic laws
  • Reliability, punctuality, and enjoyment working with teens and families
