Job description

About the team:

The Driver Training and Development team sits within the wider Driver team and is a busy, vibrant department full of people who are passionate about delivering training and assessment to the highest standards.

About the job:

Are you enthusiastic, passionate about development, and able to inspire others, while being flexible and open-minded to new ideas?

Are you keen to promote and work within an inclusive environment, while working as part of a team with the initiative to work unsupervised?

If so, this could be an exciting opportunity for you!

As a Driver Learning Manager, you'll deliver a wide range of training and assessment, predominantly to drivers, but also to other grades in the business. You'll be at the forefront of delivering huge transformation to our internal and external customers as we deliver traction conversions, initial driver training, and additional development sessions to our driver community.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • To deliver learning, development, and assessments across locations business-wide that meet current Great Western Railway and railway group standards.
  • To collaborate with operational colleagues to keep them updated on the progress of trainees prior to the completion of academy-based training.
  • To deliver all aspects of training to drivers, trainees, and other operational grades as directed.
  • To manage trainee drivers during initial training, ensuring high standards are consistently attained.
  • To maintain accurate records of training and provide excellent feedback.
  • To work with the Training Policy Team to develop and maintain training programmes.

You'll need to be:

  • Passionate about delivering high-quality training sessions.
  • Able to work as part of a team with the initiative to work unsupervised.
  • Organised, punctual, and capable of working flexible hours throughout locations in Great Western Railway.
  • Literate in the primary Office 365 applications, with attention to detail.

As a minimum you'll need to have:

  • A passion for training or coaching.
  • At least 3 years of main line train driving experience, or close to it.
  • Suitable qualifications in training and assessment or be willing to obtain such qualifications.

About the location:

While this secondment is based in the Reading Driver Training Academy, some travel will be required to other locations from time to time. As a DLM, your work may take you across the network, and travel will be necessary.

Working Pattern:

Flexibility will be required as determined by training requirements.

You will mostly work Monday – Friday; however, weekend and bank holiday work is required when necessary. Early and late training/assessment schedules mean “out of hours” training is common.

Additional Information:

To succeed in this role, you must be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a passion for the development of people so they attain their full potential.

You will need to be able to structure your workload, plan effectively, and be committed to delivering excellence, while being well-organised, self-motivated, and able to use your initiative.

Assessment schedules mean “out of hours” training is common. Flexibility will be required to meet business needs.
