Overview

Uppingham School, founded in 1584, is a leading co-educational independent boarding school. Its 875 pupils, aged 13-18, are accommodated in 15 boarding houses, taught by over 20 academic departments, and participate in numerous extra-curricular activities such as sports, music, and drama. The academic programme is supported by business units responsible for marketing, estates, finance, human resources, IT, catering, cleaning, health and safety, and enterprise/conferencing. The School employs almost 600 staff and operates seven days a week across the year. The School’s 15 boarding houses are the centre of pupil life and the hub for significant vacation conferencing business. In termtime each boarding house is home to between 45 and 60 boys (9 houses) or girls (6 houses) all aged between 13 and 18 years old. The Houseparent and their family live in the house, and the house is home for them as well. Job purpose

To lead a team of Domestic Cleaners to provide a home from home for pupils by cleaning the houses and central buildings to the highest of standards, and in houses by serving meals and undertaking laundry.

Responsibilities

• Be courteous to colleagues and pupils and provide a welcoming environment to parents, contractors, conference delegates, and other visitors.
• Work independently to complete the daily/weekly tasks assigned by your line manager to a high standard.
• Organise cleaning schedules of work areas for cleaning staff to accomplish high standards. To amend schedules of work as required, including for periods of staff absence, preparing for the start or end of terms or visiting parents.
• Provide induction training for new staff members, continue coaching, mentoring, and motivating staff members to ensure their performance is maintained at a high standard.
• Undertake checks of cleaning standards in work areas of the house, providing feedback to individual staff members, and escalating to your relevant line manager where required.
• Monitor and control cleaning product stock.
• Lead on laundry within agreed timescale from the Matron and Houseparent.
• Report equipment faults and act appropriately to ensure faulty equipment is not used until repaired or replaced.
• To report staff absence accordingly and undertake return to work interviews.
• Liaise daily with Matron and staff in order to identify and respond pro-actively to changing house needs.
• Support and organise domestic staff during lunch service.
• Comply fully with Health & Safety and Hygiene regulations and Infection Control guidelines, best practice, regulations, and the School Health & Safety Policies and guidance, including:
  • Ensure that issued uniform is always worn, and is kept fresh, clean and presentable. Attend professional training as required. As well as keeping up to date with online training.
  • Individual areas may be changed or assigned on a rotational basis, and you may be required to assist colleagues in another area.

Qualifications, skills and experience required

Terms and Conditions

Location: Uppingham

Working hours: 32.5 hours per week, 36 weeks per year. Plus an additional 105 annual clean down hours. 6 days per week on a rota basis, hours of work are expected to be 8.30am – 2.25pm. In addition, house staff are required to work additional hours at school events throughout the year.

Salary: £19,150.37 per annum

Holiday: The annual holiday entitlement is all Uppingham School holidays apart from the 4 weeks and clean down hours specified above. Public holidays in term time are normal working days.
