Job summary

Birmingham City University invites applications for the role of Head of Department of Law in its Curzon Building. The post leads strategic direction, academic leadership, and operational delivery for the Law Department, ensuring excellence in teaching, research, and student outcomes.

You will drive performance, develop talent, manage budgets and resources, and build external relationships to advance the department and the university’s Strategy 2030. Hybrid working applies.

Qualifications

• A doctoral qualification in Law or a relevant discipline.
• Principal Fellowship of Advance HE under the UK Professional Standards Framework.
• Professorial status, or eligibility for professorial appointment.
• An active research profile with external contribution to the discipline.
• Experience of successful collaboration between higher education, industry, commerce, research organisations and professional bodies.
• Experience of external examining.
• Involvement with external quality assurance agencies.
• Knowledge of the wider UK higher education research and policy environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership to the Department to meet key performance indicators (e.g., TEF, REF, KEF).
• Lead the implementation of School and University plans across learning and teaching, student experience, research and enterprise.
• Recruit, mentor, develop and manage colleagues, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning.
• Manage resources—people, finances and spaces—within budgets.
• Support curriculum and programme development and assessment quality.
• Foster equality, diversity and inclusion and drive staff and student wellbeing.
