Job description

Nottingham is a bold, vibrant, and exciting Core City at the heart of the UK, alive with potential and ambition. Nottingham City Council has faced up to significant challenges, and we’re approaching the future with courage, energy, and a clear plan to deliver meaningful change for our residents. Underpinning our rapid progress is a comprehensive transformation of our financial systems and governance. Now we’re looking for a number of key individuals to continue building on our achievements to date, and make us an exemplar of financial practice.

Reporting to the Corporate Director of Finance and Resources (S151), our new Director of Finance (Strategy) will be a highly influential and credible leader within the Finance and Resources directorate. You’ll take the lead on our medium and long-term financial planning, as well as fulfilling the duties of deputy S151 officer and playing a pivotal role in supporting our response to local government reorganisation in the region.

Other important responsibilities will include overseeing the roll-out of our new financial business partner model, producing a comprehensive capital strategy and strategic asset management plan, ensuring the Council’s companies are appropriately supported, scrutinised and challenged, and providing full-spectrum advice and insight across the Council’s financial planning, evaluation and decision-making.

Candidates must have extensive experience as a service leader, with comparable responsibilities and scope: we’re particularly interested in examples of how you have led the improvement of both performance and reputation of services. With an impressive track record of financial strategy and a nuanced understanding of local government finance, as well as the specific circumstances of our city, you’ll be a highly credible and innovative finance expert with strong analytical and communication skills.
