Job description

Director of Environment and Sustainable Transport

Our client, the London Borough of Newham, is seeking a Director of Environment and Sustainable Transport to join their team.

Must Have: Local authority experience.

The role involves leading and managing a portfolio of services, including:

  1. Street cleansing, recycling, and waste management
  2. Highways, traffic management, parking services, and sustainable transport
  3. Parks and open spaces, grounds maintenance
  4. Licensing and regulatory services (trading standards, licensing, health and safety, food safety, registrars, cemeteries, animal welfare)
  5. Community safety (emergency and business continuity planning, CCTV control room, police contract, neighbourhood operations, anti-social behaviour enforcement)
  6. Climate Action and Sustainability

As a member of the Corporate Leadership Board (CLB), the post holder will collaborate with other corporate directors and external stakeholders to achieve the Council's Corporate Plan and priorities.

Role Context:

  • The post reports to the Chief Executive.
  • Line management responsibility for up to 5 direct reports and overall responsibility for all staff in the Environment and Sustainable Transport directorate.
  • Oversight of all services within the directorate and management of the budget (exceeding £64m).
  • Accountability for a geographical area of Newham and the quality of services delivered to its citizens.
  • Joint accountability with the corporate management team for delivering the Council's Equality and Diversity action plan, which the post holder will lead and champion.
  • Participation in the Council's emergency arrangements as an on-call member of the response team.
  • Ensuring compliance with Health & Safety legislation and requirements.
  • Work may be required during evenings, weekends, and public holidays to meet service needs and represent the Council.
  • This is a politically restricted post under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 and related regulations, prohibiting active political roles.
