Job description

Join the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) in a pivotal leadership role, leading the Digital Delivery Centre. Shape and deliver a complex agenda including delivery management, user-centred design, software and cloud engineering, and solution design.

Our Digital Delivery Centre is the engine room running our digital products and services, supporting some of the NHS's largest national systems like NHS Pensions and NHS Jobs, ensuring capacity and capability for now and the future.

You will be responsible for robust delivery governance, adhering to internal and national delivery approaches, including Government Service Design standards. Lead the digitisation of services through cutting-edge technology to deliver taxpayer value and NHS savings for reinvestment in front-line care.

We offer flexible working, with the office based in Newcastle upon Tyne, requiring attendance for in-person collaboration several times a week. Interviews are scheduled for 8th & 9th July in Newcastle.

Main duties of the job

As a senior leader and NHSBSA Leadership Team member, reporting to the Chief DDaT Officer, you'll deliver sustainable transformation and harness the benefits of providing national at-scale services.

  • Develop and maintain strategies for DDaT professions in User Centred Design, Software Engineering, Solution Design/Architecture, Cloud Engineering, and Delivery Management, ensuring professional excellence and compliance with standards.
  • Ensure delivery platforms and processes are fit for purpose, working with suppliers to meet system requirements.
  • Embed a service design culture focused on user experience, accessibility, and inclusion, leading user need-led delivery based on UCD principles.
  • Align service delivery, workforce planning, and operational excellence to embed value and efficiency, championing continuous improvement and overseeing governance, risk, and compliance.
  • Develop service insights and complex data to evaluate and improve current operations, while horizon scanning for future opportunities.
  • Lead complex change and transformation initiatives, managing sensitive environments.

The NHSBSA Digital Delivery Centre is the hub for our digital products and services, overseeing their entire lifecycle from inception to retirement, including Delivery Management, User Centred Design, Software Engineering, and Cloud Engineering. Teams work in cross-functional squads, following Agile and Waterfall methodologies.

The Director will oversee teams working on major NHS systems, ensuring capacity and capability are sufficient now and in the future.

The role includes ensuring effective delivery governance, adherence to standards, and managing a matrix of People Managers to support our goal of being the best place to work. Collaboration with the Corporate People team is essential.

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide strategic leadership to a department of DDaT professionals, enabling NHSBSA's strategy and business plan through developing and implementing strategic plans, supporting the Chief Officer in vision setting.
  • Ensure platforms and processes are fit for purpose, working with suppliers to meet evolving system requirements.

Digital Data and Technology Leadership

  • Lead digital service delivery, ensuring excellence in design and operations. Support professions in delivery, fostering communities of practice and knowledge sharing.
  • Develop capabilities in digital solutions, ensuring good governance, applying Agile and Waterfall approaches, and implementing performance metrics.
  • Establish a matrix model for capacity allocation, working with stakeholders to prioritize and efficiently allocate resources.
  • Embed a user-centered service design culture, ensuring all services are built around user needs and UCD principles.
  • Stay abreast of emerging delivery practices, fostering continuous learning and adoption of new approaches.

Decision-Making & Continuous Improvement

  • Use data-driven insights for evidence-based decision-making to improve services and outcomes.

Transformation, Innovation & Stakeholder Influence

  • Lead large-scale change initiatives, fostering a culture of curiosity and continuous improvement, and managing complex stakeholder relationships with political acumen.
