Job summary

London Borough of Hackney is seeking a high‑calibre leader to head Climate, Homes and Economy operations at Assistant Director level (SM2). The role directs 24/7 frontline services including street cleansing, waste collection and fleet, with accountability for safety, governance and a multi‑million pound budget.

The post requires strategic vision, stakeholder leadership and the ability to drive service change while managing complex unions and partner relationships.

Qualifications

• Proven senior leadership experience in environmental services or public realm.
• Experience managing large frontline workforces and union relations.
• Strong understanding of statutory waste governance and health & safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Provide overarching direction for 24/7 environmental operations across street cleansing, waste collection, estate cleansing and commercial waste.
• Lead the Refuse & Recycling, Street Cleansing, Commercial Services and Fleet Management services.
• Execute data-led behaviour change strategies to engage residents and businesses, raising recycling and reducing waste.
• Expand commercial services to generate revenue and optimise resource management.
• Lead digital transformation across route planning and customer engagement.
• Direct operations at Millfields Depot and Waste Transfer Station, maintaining safety, statutory and Operator's Licence standards.
• Inspire a multi-tiered frontline workforce and foster positive union relations.
• Collaborate with strategic partners such as the North London Waste Authority.
