Our Purpose

Title and Summary

Director, Customer Risk Management Overview

We are currently looking for a Director, reporting to the Head of Customer Risk Management (CRM) for Europe. The role is based in London, or Waterloo, Belgium.

Mastercard has over $70B credit exposure to its customers and other counterparties worldwide, making the CRM role a key part of its evolving and rapidly growing business model. The CRM team is a vital component of the broader Strategy & Operations organization, supporting Mastercard’s success. This position involves engagement with senior management, sales, product teams, and customers, offering great career growth opportunities within Mastercard.

This role is on the first line of defense, with responsibilities including CRM strategy and roadmap for the portfolio, customer credit analysis and underwriting, risk mitigation, developing risk management solutions for new products, and regulatory engagement within the region.

Role

The primary responsibility is to ensure customer risk is properly identified, monitored, and managed according to Mastercard’s policies & procedures and risk appetite. Key duties include:

  • Owning all CRM related matters for the assigned portfolio
  • Performing credit risk underwriting analysis and presenting findings to senior management
  • Leading development of risk mitigants with account managers and customers
  • Designing and implementing innovative risk management approaches for various business models, including crypto
  • Influencing credit policy and standards; developing CRM procedures
  • Building relationships with sales and product teams
  • Conducting credit considerations for new customer applications
  • Managing impacts of customer failures, including portfolio transfers and license terminations
  • Conducting portfolio reviews and risk screening using early warning indicators
  • Reporting on regional exposure and risks to senior management
  • Partnering with CRM Center of Excellence for exposure monitoring
  • Engaging with regulators and central banks in the region
  • Collaborating with Treasury and Settlement Operations to improve processes

All About You

  • Graduate degree in business or equivalent
  • Experience in credit risk assessment, financial analysis, and management; banking sector knowledge and European payments regulation familiarity are strong plus
  • Commercial mindset balancing risk and reward
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, negotiation, and influencing skills
  • Leadership capability for diverse, high-performing teams and cross-functional projects
  • Ability to manage crises and make tough decisions with incomplete information
  • Excellent English communication skills
