Director, Controller

Role:
The position will be part of the Controller's group within Mastercard Europe's Finance division, reporting to the Europe Regional Controller.

Europe Controller's Group is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the US GAAP financials in partnership with the GBSC (Global Business Service Center), ensuring local statutory reporting compliance, Rebates & Incentives, as well as providing support to the business teams across a number of areas including accounting and controls.

This role is key for control oversight for Mastercard fund reinvestment process in Europe, ensuring rigorous accounting approaches and compliance with corporate policies and internal controls. The position requires building and fostering relationships across the organization at various levels and geographies.
This role oversees the timely and correct accounting treatment of all customer business agreements in terms of revenue recognition and contra-revenue (rebates and incentives) in partnership with the GBSC (Shared Services center), ensuring compliance with current applicable Mastercard policies and internal controls as well as US GAAP.
Additionally, ensuring legal entity management in compliance with US GAAP in partnership with the GBSC (Shared Services center) and local statutory financial reporting.
Responsibilities:
Funds
• Leads annual review and updates EU fund usage policy, coordinating inputs from multiple experts and fund management teams.
• Initiates and coordinates quarterly accounting reviews of fund reinvestment contracts, ensuring alignment on approaches, deadlines, and deliverables.
• Calculates and confirms monthly accruals for fund spends to GBSC, monitor PL movements, and investigate any irregularities.
• Monitors accrual balances and coordinates bi-annual BS clearing processes with GBSC.
• Collects information/documents and initiates quarterly billing for "pay-as-agent" contracts with customers.
• Arranges and delivers periodic training sessions for finance teams, fund administrators, and broader business teams.
• Supports the Regional Internal Control Lead with periodic reviews of end-to-end fund management processes in selected countries.
• Handles internal auditors' requests, covering accounting-related questions during IA reviews of the fund management process in Europe.
• Acta as a subject-matter expert, assisting business teams with fund usage requirements and coordinating complex reviews with tax, legal, compliance, and other experts as needed

Rebates & Incentives
• Responsible for overseeing the quality of the full accounting process for rebates and incentives (R&I or contra-revenue) ensuring timely and accurate accounting treatment for the countries under scope. (Note the operational accounting process is carried out by the GBSC).
• Provide complex accounting advice and guidance: discuss, challenge and validate various accounting treatments, and communicate them effectively to ensure proper understanding and application by Regional Finance teams and other regional stakeholders.
• Participate in the contract drafting process as a reviewer to ensure that contract verbiage in customer business agreements enables proper accounting treatment in line with the applicable Mastercard policies and US GAAP as well as provides clear interpretation of the financial clauses in the contract.
• Perform various oversight controls for the R&I accounting process including review of monthly balance sheet reconciliation, quarterly reporting deliverables for Corporate and deal performance monitoring in the region.
• Maintaining Process and Controls documentation for SOX purposes.

Legal entity accounting
• Prepare & review the conversion of accounts from US GAAP to local GAAP as well as review of the financial statements for entities to ensure submitted to authorities as per applicable deadline.
• Monthly monitoring of trial balances to ensure accuracy.
• Oversee and manage legal entity external audits.

About You:
• Finance/Accounting/business qualification or related disciplines - CA/ACA/CPA.
• Strong knowledge of US GAAP/IFRS combined with previous accounting and reporting experience. Big 4 experience is preferred
Strong understanding of internal controls
• Proficiency with accounting and finance systems/software applications e.g. Excel and Oracle.
• Driven by a continuous improvement agenda, demonstrated through challenging and improving processes.
• Detailed orientated with strong analytical and financial skills supported by excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience operating in a diverse, multi-functional finance group across time zones is a plus.
• Must be able to integrate knowledge across various disciplines and work across multi-disciplinary teams.
• Independent worker and thinker with the ability to follow up on time sensitive issues and ability to drive others.
