Job summary

Pivotal is seeking an experienced Director of Business Development in Greater London to drive sales strategy and client acquisition across multiple therapeutic areas. You will lead a high-performing team, engage with senior clients, and coordinate responses to RFIs and RFPs while shaping the company’s market approach.

This role offers exposure to major clients, global projects, and career growth within a scientific and data-driven CRO.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of sales experience in CROs.
  • Proven track record with mid- and high-level contacts.
  • Excellent business awareness and a grasp of industry trends.
  • Customer obsession and commitment to client satisfaction.
  • Ability to earn trust and influence across teams and clients.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills for pipeline and budget reviews.
  • Excellent communication with colleagues and clients.
  • English required; other languages desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Support design and implementation of the sales strategy plan and market trends.
  • Identify potential clients and define engagement strategies (channel, owner, etc.).
  • Maintain knowledge of Pivotal services and craft sales messages.
  • Source and close new clients via referrals, cold calling, networking, and events.
  • Develop sales plans for target accounts and opportunities.
  • Be the first point of contact for prospects and clients.
  • Coordinate RFIs, RFPs, and bid defenses; review materials before sign-off by CEO/SVP.
  • Lead sales initiatives with external partners to align goals.
  • Monitor client satisfaction and resolve issues.
  • Participate in monthly sales reviews and report activity.
  • Update CRM with client, bids, and pipeline data.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Support the design and implementation of the sales strategy plan. Perform market analysis to identify trends.
  • Perform market analysis identifying potential clients and define strategy to approach them (channel, responsible person, etc.).
  • Maintain general knowledge of all Pivotal services, develop and lead sales presentation and marketing messages.
  • Sourced and closed new clients through referrals, cold calling, networking, and other means (conference/trade shows planning and attendance, regional organisations, etc.)
  • Leverage potential new business opportunities within existing clients. Analyze potential opportunities and develop sales plans for each target account. Ensure appropriate strategy/solution is proposed to clients.
  • Serve as first and principal point of contact with prospects and existing clients.
  • Support the coordination of the proposals´ team, develop and provide oversight on the development of RFIs, RFPs and bid defences. Review full RFP and Bid defence materials prior to CEO or SVP CD sign-off.
  • Coordinate, manage and lead sales initiatives and activities including external parties to ensure alignment.
  • Monitor client satisfaction by communicating regularly with clients and proactively resolve clients´ issues.
  • Participate in monthly sales review meetings.
  • Update CRM reporting tool (existing clients, bids and potential clients) and prepare monthly sales activity report including client-segmentation and assessment.
Required profile:
  • University degree highly recommended.
  • 8 years of sales experience in CROs is a must
  • Proven track record at mid- and high-level contacts
  • Excellent Business/Industry awareness and a thorough understanding of industry trends and impact on the business
  • High customer obsession skills, works relentlessly towards optimal client experience and satisfaction.
  • Ability to continuously earn trust by influencing others internally and externally.
  • Ability to deliver results while working on multiple assignments and ability to meet demanding deadlines and expectations in a changing environment.
  • Ability to creatively solve problems and generate new ideas.
  • Advanced analytics for assessing and interpreting pipeline management data and for reviewing budgets.
  • Excellent oral and communication skills.
  • Effective communication with colleagues, managers and clients.
  • Digital process oriented and experience with CRMs is desirable.
  • Language skills: English a must and other languages desirable.
