The Role
DIO Estates currently have a vacancy for a Principal Surveyor to lead a team within our Acquisitions and Disposals division.
The post holder will lead one of the Development Surveying Teams in the South of England having responsibility for a portfolio of site disposal projects. They will have a background in creating value from redundant assets and implementing disposal strategies to deliver financial and other benefits. Broad ranging project and estate management experience is essential. The variety and scale of work on offer is exceptional.
This is an exciting opportunity to join our nationwide network of highly skilled Surveyors, and we are looking for a motivated suitability qualified property professional to join and lead an established team, working closely with military and civilian colleges delivering exciting, varied estate activities, programmes, and subject matter professional advice.
The MOD Estate is wide and varied, on this unique Estate variety is certain and no 2 days will be the same! The breadth of work on offer is exceptional with opportunities to get involved in a wide range of projects across the UK to enable Defence capability.

Job Description
Main Responsibilities
You will cover the southern region of the UK and have special responsibility for managing one of the departments’ disposal programmes and well as taking a direct lead on some larger strategic disposals. You will thrive on variety and complexity, be a strong team player and enjoy fronting up to a challenge. You will encounter a vast array of stakeholders and will commission and work closely with an extensive supply chain. You will be motivated to support your customers, the various divisions of the armed forces, by providing them with sound professional advice.
The work is extremely varied and wide ranging, but key activities for each of the role will include:
- Managing and reporting on a Disposals Programme.
- Leading on the delivery of 2x large disposal sites - Including town planning investigations, master planning, valuation, site surveys, stakeholder communication, disposal strategy and implementation.
- Managing a small team of Surveyors and supporting a graduate or apprentice.
- Assisting the Deputy Head of Estates on wider Estate matters in the South - including, for example, site management, health and safety and legal matters
- Contributing to the broader management of the Estates Acquisition and Disposal Team - including, for example, arrangement of team meetings, CPD and networking events.
Location
The role will be based at the Andover office and the successful candidate will be expected to regularly attend the office location and will involve weekly attendance to the office for face-to-face meetings and collaboration. The role will involve regular travel to sites within their region and occasionally UK wide for meetings and/or site inspections.Alongside the advertised locations, other DIO locations may be offered.
If travelling outside your base location for duty reasons, you will have access to flights, hire cars, rail tickets and overnight accommodation. You can also claim 45 pence per mile should you choose to use your own vehicle for business travel.
Travel may be required to carry out site visits where you may go on MOD Establishments, residential estates, building sites, agricultural land, training areas and firing ranges etc.
Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. DIO Business Area – Estates
The Defence estate is one of the largest landholdings in the UK and covers an estimated 1.8% of the UK land mass (200,000+ ha). This is complemented by a significant UK Defence presence overseas.
Estates are the in-house real estate team within the DIO (part of the UK Ministry of Defence) supporting infrastructure needs across a high-profile Public Estate. We acquire, manage, safeguard, and dispose of Defence real estate. Our unique customer knowledge and insight of the Defence Estate enables our in-house team of property professionals to provide in-depth advice to our Military customers.
The Teams
Acquisitions and Disposals (A&D) is the in-house Estates team responsible for disposing of all surplus MOD land and property to realise capital receipts for re-investment in the retained MOD estate. The team manages an extensive pipeline of sites for disposal supporting major infrastructure programmes. Theteam also acquire land and property for MOD projects when required.

Essential Experience
Relevant, suitable experience and knowledge at an appropriate level in property acquisition, disposals and leadership of teams, including:
- Landlord & Tenant
- Strategic planning, development control, planning and project management

Licences
Full Driving Licence Essential: Post holders will be required to travel to the sites covered by the post on a regular basis and some sites are difficult to access via public transport.
