Job summary

Airbus's Digital Operations Apprentice role offers hands-on experience at a world-class manufacturing facility in North Wales. You will learn to translate complex wing-manufacturing and logistics needs into digital IT solutions using SAP ECC/HANA and SAFe methodologies.

You will study for a fully funded BSc (Hons) in Applied Data Science at Bangor University and local colleges, with day release for college in North Wales.

The Role

We are looking for a Digital Operations Apprentice, you will be at the heart of one of the world’s most advanced manufacturing facilities. Your mission is to learn how to translate complex wing-manufacturing and logistics needs into powerful digital solutions.

You will join a multinational digital community, bridging the gap between our shop-floor production teams and global IT systems. Through a structured apprenticeship, you will master SAP ECC/HANA technology and learn how to manage digital products using cutting-edge Agile (SAFe) methodologies.

Under the guidance of your placement managers, you will develop your skills by working on the following activities:

• Requirements Gathering: Collaborate with logistics and manufacturing experts to understand their business needs and turn them into robust IT solutions;
• Agile Product Management: Participate in continuous improvement and help manage the digital Product Backlog using the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe);
• SAP Configuration & Innovation: Learn to configure SAP modules that power our supply chain, while exploring innovative SAP technologies (such as SAP Fiori, HANA, and Warehouse Management);
• Testing & Documentation: Design, test, and document new features and system enhancements alongside technical experts before they go live;
• Deployment: Support the rollout of new digital tools across the Broughton site and other manufacturing plants, ensuring users are trained and ready for change;
• Trend Watching: Keep an eye on external digital and logistics trends to help challenge and improve our current business process.

Over the 3 years, alongside your workplace commitments, you will achieve a fully funded BSc (Hons) in Applied Data Science. The completion of this degree will be intertwined with your work based experiences, part of which will directly contribute to your degree.

You will be studying via our partner Bangor University and local colleges. Your industry based work takes place at our world leading aircraft manufacturer site in Broughton (near Chester), North Wales. Please note, this will require some travel on day release study to a college in North Wales.

We are also believers in experiential learning too, and there are many events that take place that offer exciting opportunities to grow and develop whilst also having fun!

What you will be doing

This apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of on the job training at Airbus, and university based learning on day release over the duration of the 3 year programme.

You will learn and apply cutting-edge Applied Data Science principles to real-world business challenges. You'll gain invaluable hands-on experience that not only contributes to your degree but also directly adds significant value to our operations.

Key activities of the industry based work of this apprenticeship may include:

• Driving Data-Led Performance: Leading and participating in data analytics projects focused on enhancing our manufacturing performance and extracting actionable insights from complex datasets;
• Innovating with Digital Tools: Researching, evaluating, and developing new digital and AI-powered tools to boost the efficiency of our IT product development lifecycle;
• Shaping Product Development: Engaging in product development initiatives, encompassing the analysis, design, testing, and seamless integration of IT solutions;
• Crafting Bespoke Software: Developing and customizing tailored software solutions that adapt to our evolving business needs and market demands;
• End-to-End Project Management: Managing projects from inception, including gathering requirements, defining technical specifications, architecting solutions, maintaining comprehensive documentation, and overseeing project timelines.

During this time, you will also get to work with various teams in our engineering, design, quality, operations, cyber security, IT solutions and help desk teams, whilst also having the opportunity to pick placements outside of your area of study, including HR, facilities management, recruitment, finance and much more.

Requirements

This is an ideal role for someone with a keen interest in digital technology, Internet of Things, mobile apps, data analytics, cybersecurity, Generative AI and future tech.

In order to be eligible to this apprenticeship, you must have a minimum of:

• 3 A-Levels as grade C/4 or above, with at least one in Maths, Sciences and IT
• OR BTEC L3 Extended Diploma and Cambridge Technical Diplomas in Maths, Science or IT/Digital subject, at minimum MMM grade
• OR Access to HE Diploma Merit Level in either Maths, Science or an IT subject
• OR Welsh Baccalaureate with either a Maths, Science or an IT subject at H grades
• OR Equivalent qualifications/Experience subject to validation
• AND GCSEs 4/C or above in Maths and English Language

**Please note that, due to the funded nature of this programme, applicants with undergraduate degrees in computing/IT are not eligible.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

• Digital savviness: Comfort with tools like Google Workspace;
• Self-motivation and a strong drive for personal development;
• Strong listening and communication skills;
• Flexibility and happiness to work on a wide variety of tasks;
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage priorities;
• Technical familiarity: Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, SQL, JavaScript), data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau), or cloud platforms (e.g., Google Cloud, AWS, Azure) is beneficial, but not required;
• Submit your CV stating your grades and if they are predicted or achieved;

Important Information:

GRADES: If you are on predicted grades, your offer will be conditional to achieving the position’s requirements before the apprenticeship start date.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: You will be subject to a BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) check. You may also need to gain UK SC-level Security Clearance or Export Control, depending on the role.
