Job summary

Balfour Beatty Highways is seeking a Digital Engineering Engineer for the A66 NTP scheme, based in Penrith, Cumbria. You will deliver Civil 3D modelling, Navisworks federation, model coordination, digital information workflows and assurance to support project strategy and information management.

You will contribute to BIM delivery, digital rehearsals and model-based handovers, working with design, planning, GIS and supply chain teams to improve information quality and reduce risk.

About the role

Our Balfour Beatty Highways business has a fantastic opportunity for a Digital Engineering Engineer to join our team on the Highways A66 NTP Scheme, this role will be based at Penrith, Cumbria

What you'll be doing

To deliver Digital Engineering activities for the A66 project, with a primary focus on Civil 3D model development, Navisworks federation, model coordination, assurance and digital information workflows that support the project digital strategy and information management requirements. The role is responsible for helping ensure project information is accurate, coordinated, compliant and suitable. The Digital Engineering Engineer acts as a key technical Digital Engineering resource, supporting the Project Information Model, digital assurance processes, design coordination, clash detection, model-based reviews, digital rehearsals and model-based handover planning. The role helps produce reliable digital outputs that improve collaboration, reduce risk, minimise rework and support informed decision-making across the project.

  • Develop, update, manage and assure Civil 3D models and associated Digital Engineering outputs in accordance with project standards and contractual information requirements.
  • Responsible for creating, updating and maintaining project models and associated Digital Engineering information in accordance with project requirements.
  • Support delivery of the project digital strategy, information management requirements, BEP, MIDP/TIDP, digital standards, methods and procedures.
  • Support the delivery and assurance of the Project Information Model, ensuring models and associated data are accurate, coordinated and suitable for project use.
  • Undertake model federation in Navisworks, including design review support, clash detection, data validation, issue tracking and resolution reporting.
  • Support model coordination activities for allocated work packages, including IDC/IDR processes, coordination reviews and model-based technical discussions.
  • Support digital rehearsals, model-based reviews and visualisation activities by developing, preparing and coordinating models to support project planning and delivery.
  • Support 4D planning, model-based sequencing, handover planning and asset information integration where required, ensuring models and data can support construction and handover activities.
  • Support task teams and information authors by providing technical guidance, checking information quality and escalating risks associated with the production and use of the Project Information Model.
  • Ensure quality, accuracy and compliance of project information across Digital Engineering deliverables, helping to reduce design and construction risk.
  • Work closely with design, construction, planning, project controls, GIS, Project Information Management and supply chain teams to resolve technical issues and improve information quality.
  • Generate digital insights, model review outputs, coordination reports and lessons learnt to support project decision-making, continuous improvement and wider Digital Engineering best practice.
  • Align Digital Engineering outputs, model workflows and data structures with wider Balfour Beatty Digital Engineering initiatives, standards and best practice, contributing to consistency, continuous improvement and knowledge sharing across the business.
  • Provide technical support, guidance and knowledge transfer to project users, technicians and supply chain contributors in the use of Digital Engineering tools and workflows.
Who we're looking for
  • Essential experience using Autodesk Civil 3D for infrastructure model development, coordination and data management.
  • Essential experience using Navisworks Manage for model federation, clash detection, model review and coordination reporting.
  • Experience producing, developing, checking and assuring 3D models within infrastructure, highways, construction or design delivery environments.
  • Experience supporting digital rehearsals, model-based reviews and visualisation activities for construction planning and delivery coordination.
  • Competent in model coordination, clash detection, issue management, design review workflows and resolution tracking.
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), Common Data Environment (CDE) workflows and structured information management processes.
  • Appreciation of ISO 19650 principles, BIM Framework standards, BEP, MIDP/TIDP and contractual information requirements.
  • Knowledge of 4D model integration, 5D quantity extraction, ADMM delivery requirements, Progressive Assurance, common coding, asset information and model based handover would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of GIS and the integration of model, asset and geospatial information would be beneficial.
  • Able to work under minimal supervision and manage allocated tasks through to completion.
  • Excellent organisational skills with strong attention to detail, accuracy and information quality.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary project teams and supply chain partners.
  • Able to provide technical support, basic training and guidance to others in Digital Engineering tools, processes, task information requirements and project standards.
  • Ability to work to project deadlines while maintaining quality, accuracy and compliance of digital information.
  • Understanding of health, safety and quality expectations and a commitment to supporting Zero Harm through accurate, coordinated and reliable project information.
