Job summary

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is recruiting a diagnostic radiology physicist for a 12‑month fixed term position in the Radiological Sciences Unit. The role provides scientific advice, radiation safety support, and QA for imaging services across the Trust and partner sites.

Applicants should be HCPC registered or eligible, with an MSc in Medical Physics and experience in DR QA and clinical environments.

Qualifications

• MSc in Medical Physics or equivalent.
• HCPC registration or ability to achieve within a reasonable timescale.
• Completion of Scientist Training Programme in Medical Physics, or equivalent.
• Experience in radiation safety applied to medical imaging.
• Experience in DR quality assurance and radiological physics within a clinical setting.

Responsibilities

• Develop and manage QA for x-ray equipment within the Trust.
• Perform routine QA, performance assessments, and audits for imaging devices.
• Carry out acceptance testing of new radiological physics installations.
• Troubleshoot x-ray equipment across the Trust and external sites.
• Supervise trainees and contribute to teaching and knowledge sharing.
• Support research and audits in Radiological Physics, RSU and Imaging.

Job overview

We have a new 12 month (fixed term) vacancy for a diagnostic radiology (DR) physicist within the Radiological Sciences Unit of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHNT), due to a career break.

The successful applicants will work in a helpful, friendly and dynamic team, delivering scientific advice and technical support in diagnostic radiology and radiation safety to ICHNT and external organisations.

The position offers excellent opportunities for learning and developing skills, and will broaden your experience across all aspects of Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Safety. Ideally, you will have working experience in some or all of the areas of quality assurance and radiation safety, and will be a clinical scientist registered with HCPC.

Candidates with less experience (currently training in the Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Protection specialism or working towards HCPC registration via route 2) are encouraged to apply as training and support will be available (subject to an amended job description and salary band).

The Trust has a full range of state-of-the-art imaging equipment and a dose management system. We provide a broad range of clinical service support, teaching and research in all imaging related healthcare disciplines – radiology (diagnostic, screening, interventional), breast and cardiology - and research and development is encouraged.

Main duties of the job

• Contribute to the development and delivery of day-to-day management of the Quality Assurance programme for x-ray equipment within the Trust and Service Level Agreement customers.
• Providing routine quality assurance, performance assessment, auditing in support of x-ray equipment. This involves high precision, complex measurements and safe use of radiation.
• Acceptance testing of new radiological physics installations across the Trust and for Service Level Agreement customers.
• Day to day troubleshooting of x-ray equipment across the Trust and for Service Level Agreement customers.
• Contribute to the development, use and maintenance of software applications support in support of the clinical use and Quality Assurance of imaging equipment
• Provide day-to-day supervision of trainee Clinical Scientists
• Teach specialised information to large groups (>20 people) within the Trust and on external courses.
• Participate in and support research and development within Radiological Physics, RSU and Imaging
• Take part in clinical audits
• Present their scientific findings at conferences; the impact of this could be national / international.

Person specification

Education

• MSc in Medical Physics or equivalent
• Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or ability to achieve this within a reasonable timescale
• Successful completion of Scientist Training Programme in Medical Physics, or equivalent

Experience

• Relevant experience in radiation safety applied to use of ionising radiation in medicine and of diagnostic radiology physics
• Experience in DR quality assurance (able to test a wide range of diagnostic x-ray imaging equipment - simple to mid-range systems independently, more complex systems with supervision
• Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from radiation exposure and of the image quality requirements for a range of diagnostic imaging procedures
• Some experience of working in a clinical environment
• Working towards MPE accreditation

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

• In-depth specialist knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines
• Ability to interpret and apply such relevant guidance and legislation
• Able to work independently providing specialist advice to the Trust
• Proficient with Microsoft Office (specifically Word & Excel); able to set up databases and spreadsheets and extract information
• Experience of computer programming e.g. ImageJ
• Statistical analysis techniques
• Knowledge of wider clinical issues and their implications
• Good communication of complex physics to staff with a range of backgrounds
