Job summary

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Health Care Assistant to join the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme. You will greet service users, explain the screening process, and obtain accurate eyesight measurements before dilating drops.

You will work across clinics in Frome, Shepton Mallet and Wincanton, with occasional cover at other sites. A full clean driving licence and access to your own vehicle are required; travel expenses are paid beyond base mileage.

Qualifications

• Experience in a health or care setting is advantageous.
• Working towards Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners will be completed within 2 years.
• Literacy and English language skills are required.

Responsibilities

• Greet service users and explain the screening process.
• Obtain accurate eyesight measurements before eye drops are instilled.
• Carry out computer-based data entry and maintain records.
• Travel to clinic locations and cover occasional weekends/evenings as needed.

Job description

The Diabetic Eye Screening Programme works across the County of Somerset to deliver high quality Eye Screening for all people aged over 12 diagnosed with diabetes. We are looking for someone who has an eye for details and is caring and compassionate to all our service users. As a member of the Team you will be required to work closely with other team members across different locations to ensure the smooth running of our busy clinics. A large part of the job role is greet our service users, explain the screening process to them and obtain an accurate measure of eyesight before instilling dilating eye drops. There is a degree of computer work within role which must be carried out accurately. There will be full training given and you will be required as part of this job role to pass some vocational learning. Although this position is to mainly cover clinics in Frome, Shepton Mallet and Wincanton there may also be a necessity to cover other clinic locations and therefore it is necessary for a full clean driving licence and access to your own vehicle. Expenses are payable when travelling beyond your home to base mileage. Main duties, tasks & skills required Experience of working in a care setting would be advantageous but all necessary skills training, professional updates and mandatory training as appropriate to the post will be provided. Full details of duties can be found in the job description. There will be an expectation of a flexible approach to clinic locations and possible working day changes if agreed by both parties. There are also occasional weekend and evening clinics to be covered.

Relevant health sector experience at Health Care Assistant level or equivalent. Working towards Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners. Will be acquired during employment and must be completed within 2 years., Evidence of a good standard of Literacy/English language skills, Previous experience in Community Hospital/Clinic Settings as HCA or equivalent Experience in OPD/Clinic Setting Working in a team environment, Basic keyboard skills, email, Excel and Word Basic clinical skills e.g. instil eye drops Ability to communicate to a range of clients Problem solving ability and negotiation skills Requirement to exercise discretion and tact when speaking to people Prepared to travel to other sites and have access to own transport Frequent use of VDU Disclosure and Barring Service Check This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
