Communication Responsibilities: Responsible for informing admin staff and line manager of issues during clinics. Liaises with IT helpdesk, software company, and camera engineers as appropriate in the event of technical issues, records outcomes, and informs the Line Manager. Maintains confidentiality at all times in line with the Data Protection Act and Trust Information Governance guidance and policies. Provides and receives complex or sensitive information related to patient care, recognizing barriers to understanding. Uses interpersonal skills to communicate condition-related information clearly and concisely with colleagues, patients, carers, and relatives, providing empathy and reassurance. Reports all concerns, accidents, and incidents relating to self, patients, staff, or visitors in accordance with the Trust incident reporting system (Datix). Participates effectively in the programme and team teaching sessions with the rest of the DESP team. Communicates effectively using Trust IT systems (Email, intranet, clinic list information, data collection systems). Communicates with other healthcare professionals as necessary, ensuring appropriate safeguarding of patients/staff. Works closely with department staff and staff from the Diabetes Unit and Ophthalmology department, attending feedback and training meetings as necessary. Responds appropriately to all telephone and personal enquiries in a sensitive and helpful manner.

Patient Care Delivery - Clinical Core Responsibilities: Ensures patients are treated with courtesy at all times; respects their individual needs; maintains patient privacy and dignity. Manages clinic preparation, ensuring all stock and equipment are available, and tests equipment. Organizes and prioritizes own workload daily. Provides high-quality patient care appropriate to patient needs. Is responsible for a group of patients with indirect supervision of line manager. Ensures timely patient assessments, communicates delays, and manages patient safety and wellbeing, including transport and safeguarding follow-up. Takes appropriate history, explains procedures, gains consent, and records this information. Conducts visual acuity tests, full pupil dilation, captures retinal images, and obtains comprehensive patient history to ensure optimal outcomes. Records necessary notes to assist follow-up visits, considering impairments or special needs. Uses patient interactions to increase understanding of diabetes and eye health. Makes decisions on image priority for grader assessment and records results.

Service Delivery and Improvement - Administrative: Ensures clinic admin work is completed; all clinics are accounted for with allocated screeners. Distributes workload among team members, raises issues to line manager, ensures patient follow-up, and updates patient status. Provides admin support as requested. Participates in research and clinical audits, staying updated with practice changes.

Organisation/Leadership: Adheres to Trust policies, works effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, collects data for audits, and reports. Collaborates with line manager to identify and implement improvements. Recognizes own competence, uses resources effectively, maintains stock levels, and acts as a workplace role model. Undertakes link roles (fire warden, infection control, etc.), attends meetings, and keeps colleagues informed.

People Management and Development: Supports training of new screeners. Attends mandatory and developmental training, participates in appraisals, and plans personal learning needs. Engages in service development activities and adheres to professional standards.
