Diabetes Specialist Nurse - Maternity Cover

Department: Diabetes

Band 7 £47,810 - £54,710 per annum pro rata (will consider developmental B6). Hours 37.5 per week. MKUH roles considered for flexible working. Interview date: 24 October 2025.

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Diabetes Specialist Nurse to join our outpatient team, with a focus on antenatal care for patients with pre-existing Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. The role involves pre-conception triage and advice, working with patients and healthcare professionals to optimise care before and during pregnancy. The role also includes management of insulin pumps and cross-cover for the insulin pump service.

Main duties and responsibilities

To provide expert care and advice to all patients with different types of Diabetes who attend the hospital as inpatients or outpatients. To reduce the impact of symptoms and improve the quality of care by optimising treatment and providing education and support for patients and their families and carers.

To take the lead in development and delivery of expert education and training in diabetes for other health professionals and stakeholders. To act independently and, when necessary, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to ensure patients receive optimal care.

Education and professional practice

Identify ongoing training and educational needs of people with diabetes, their carers and families in relation to treatment and management of different types of diabetes and prevention of related complications. Provide specialist, expert education to patients, their families and to other health professionals and stakeholders.

Main duties and responsibilities

Demonstrate professional leadership and management of the in-patient service. Take accountability for practice and, with the healthcare team, strive for high standards of practice.

Nurse/Patient relationships

Establish a relationship of trust with patients, carers and families. Demonstrate expertise in caring for complex patients with comorbid conditions and their families who require new skills to live with a chronic condition.

Management of patient ill health/illness status

Receive direct referrals from medical staff, nursing staff and patients. Review appropriateness of referrals. Act as an expert practitioner in managing the patient’s chronic condition, demonstrating advanced clinical skills and knowledge to professional staff and patients with diabetes.

Education

Identify ongoing training and educational needs of people with diabetes, carers and families. Provide specialist education to patients, families and other health professionals and stakeholders.
