Job summary

Sopra Steria is seeking a DevOps & Automation Engineer to join its Aerospace, Defence and Security team. The role is on-site in London, Manchester or Gloucestershire, focusing on secure delivery and robust automation across complex programmes.

You will design and implement automation solutions, enhance CI/CD pipelines, and mentor engineers, ensuring high availability and secure operations. Enhanced Developed Vetting clearance is required by security.

Qualifications

• Experience in secure, highly available environments using Microsoft/Linux.
• Hands-on with configuration management and IaC approaches.
• Experience with Ansible and Terraform for automation.
• Scripting in PowerShell, Bash, or Python.
• Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (GitLab or equivalent).
• Strong understanding of network security principles and system integration.

Responsibilities

• Design DevOps and automation solutions for infrastructure and delivery challenges.
• Develop scripts, services and configurations to support IaC.
• Build, maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines and tooling.
• Own automation initiatives from design through delivery and handover.

Job description

We’re looking for a DevOps & Automation Engineer to join our Aerospace, Defence and Security team. You’ll be part of a highly skilled, collaborative environment where quality, consistency and secure delivery are key. Working across a range of complex programmes, you’ll contribute to building and maintaining robust infrastructure and automation solutions that make a real impact.

This is an on‑site role, based in London, Manchester or Gloucestershire, supporting highly secure client environments. You’ll be working alongside experienced engineers who are passionate about sharing knowledge, supporting each other and continuously improving how we deliver for our customers.

What you’ll be doing

• Designing and implementing DevOps and automation solutions to address infrastructure and delivery challenges across the account.
• Developing scripts, services and configurations that support Infrastructure as Code approaches.
• Building, maintaining and improving continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines and associated tooling.
• Taking ownership of automation initiatives from design through to delivery and handover.
• Providing technical guidance and mentoring to engineers, supporting capability development across the team.
• Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues across infrastructure, automation pipelines and integrated systems.

What you’ll bring

• Strong experience working with Microsoft and Linux technologies in secure, highly available environments.
• Hands‑on knowledge of configuration management and Infrastructure as Code approaches.
• Experience using automation tools such as Ansible and Terraform.
• Scripting capability using technologies such as PowerShell, Bash or Python.
• Experience building and maintaining pipeline tooling such as GitLab or equivalent.
• Good understanding of network security principles and system integration challenges.

It would be great if you had

• Experience with container platforms such as Kubernetes or similar technologies.
• Exposure to virtualisation technologies within enterprise environments.
• Experience working across on‑premises, hybrid or multi‑cloud environments.
• Knowledge of agile delivery methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban.
• Awareness of security frameworks and secure design principles.
• Experience contributing to solution design and technical documentation.
