The Med Mal underwriting team is based across our York, London, and Colchester offices. The team is responsible for driving profitable growth across Hiscox UK in the Allied Healthcare sector.

The team aligns with our regional development underwriting teams to ensure seamless service to our brokers, leveraging relationships to support the profitable growth of new and existing business, including cross-sell and up-sell.

The Role:

Working in the specialist Med Mal underwriting team, you will be responsible for renewing and servicing existing accounts. You will need to actively seek, develop, and grow new business opportunities for allied healthcare within the UK. The role is ideally based in Colchester or York, and travel to regional offices will be required.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Underwrite consistently and profitably.
  2. Develop close, effective relationships with brokers.
  3. Negotiate effectively with internal and external parties, including points of contact within brokerages.
  4. Maintain and develop internal and external customer relations.
  5. Visit broker partners and write their business.
  6. Identify and challenge non-standard underwriting decisions within the Technical Underwriting Guide (TUG), with a reasoned referral to an underwriting manager.
  7. Identify non-performing broker accounts in terms of profitability, retention, and new business ratios, and take remedial steps to improve this business.

Key requirements:

  1. A minimum of three years relevant Medical Malpractice development underwriting experience.
  2. ACII qualification or progression towards this.
  3. Demonstrable drive, self-motivation, and determination to achieve results.
  4. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven track record of relationship management and customer focus.
  5. Ability to consider potential outcomes and make decisions with supervision in complex situations, using key facts available.
  6. Strong influencing and negotiation skills.
  7. Team player.
  8. Outgoing and confident.
  9. Consistently demonstrates behaviors conducive to achieving personal and team objectives, in line with Hiscox's core values.
  10. Preferably degree qualified with a minimum of 2 A levels at grade C or above, although this is not mandatory for experienced underwriters.
