The Team:

The Med Mal underwriting team is based across York, London, and Colchester offices. They drive profitable growth in Hiscox UK, focusing on the Allied Healthcare sector. They support regional development underwriting teams to ensure seamless service to brokers, leveraging relationships for growth, cross-sell, and up-sell.

The Role:

Working within the specialist Med Mal underwriting team, responsibilities include renewing and servicing existing accounts, actively finding, developing, and growing new business opportunities within UK allied healthcare. The role is based in Colchester or York, with travel to regional offices expected.

Key responsibilities:
  • Underwrite consistently and profitably
  • Develop close, effective relationships with brokers
  • Negotiate with internal and external parties, including brokers
  • Maintain and develop customer relations
  • Visit broker partners and write their business
  • Identify and challenge non-standard underwriting decisions within the Technical Underwriting Guide (TUG), referring to an underwriting manager when needed
  • Identify non-performing broker accounts and take remedial actions to improve profitability
Key requirements:
  • Minimum three years relevant Medical Malpractice underwriting experience
  • ACII qualification or progression towards it
  • Drive, self-motivation, and determination to achieve results
  • Outstanding communication and relationship management skills
  • Ability to make logical decisions with supervision in complex situations
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills
  • Team player, outgoing, and confident
  • Behaviors aligned with Hiscox’s core values
  • Degree qualification or minimum 2 A levels at grade C or above is preferred but not essential for experienced underwriters
