The role

The Commercial Property Owners (CPO) team, based across the UK, insures both commercial and residential buildings, often as part of large property portfolios. With our open market business doubling in 2023 and continuing into 2024, and our schemes business expected to quadruple in size, we are looking for a fourth underwriter to support growth and align with our schemes accounts long-term.

Your initial responsibilities will include working across open market and schemes accounts, engaging with brokers on new and existing business. This dynamic role involves handling policies of varying sizes, maintaining broker relationships, and supporting business growth. As new schemes are introduced, your focus will shift more towards managing and developing those relationships, handling new business, renewals, or MTAs outside of delegated authority.

You will collaborate with the Head of Property Owners, open market underwriters, and scheme underwriters to drive profitable growth within the CPO business.

What you’ll be doing:

• Underwriting Property Owners schemes, including products like Buildings, Loss of Rent, Property Owners Liability, Engineering Breakdown, and Terrorism, aiming to meet GWP targets.
• Underwriting new and existing business, focusing on larger, complex cases in both open market and schemes.
• Managing broker relationships, developing and executing annual business plans to achieve growth targets.
• Taking responsibility for Hiscox’s relationships with brokers, ensuring profitable growth.
• Identifying underperforming accounts and implementing measures for improvement.
• Driving new business by building strong broker relationships and providing excellent service.
• Contributing to annual Sales and Underwriting Audits.

• Strong property underwriting experience.
• Ability to analyze and recommend underwriting decisions for individual and portfolio business.
• Adaptability to switch between open market and schemes, new and existing business.
• Excellent relationship building, influencing, and negotiation skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Good market knowledge, including competitors and factors affecting the market.
• Experience with schemes business or a good understanding of how schemes operate.
• Diploma CII qualification or relevant experience exempting it as per FCA standards.
