Job summary

Stovax Gazco in Exeter, UK, is seeking an R&D design engineer responsible for manufacturability and development of new product designs. You will guide manufacturing and assembly during design iterations and lead cost-reduction and quality-improvement projects within the R&D function.

You will influence geometry, tolerances and standardisation, collaborate with Production Engineering and other stakeholders to ensure designs are manufacturable and compliant with standards, and drive project

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for ensuring designs throughout the new product development process are suitable for manufacture, adequately assessed and prototypes are produced and signed off prior to pre-production builds
  • Influence component geometry, tolerances and standardisation across the design and development process
  • Identify manufacturing, assembly, tooling and material challenges in early product development designs
  • Ensure designs are practicable, repeatable and manufacturable using the intended processes
  • Work with Production Engineering to ensure designs meet efficiency and optimisation targets in prototype development
  • Design for efficient, repeatable and cost-effective manufacture and assembly
  • Collaborate with NPD teams, Production Engineering, Quality, Purchasing and Marketing for successful product implementation
  • Ensure designs comply with engineering standards, legislation and company procedures
  • Lead R&D initiative projects, ensure deadlines are met and progress is reported

Job description

The Vacancy

Working within the R&D department, you will be responsible for the manufacturability and development of new product designs, ensuring that designs are technically robust, manufacturable, repeatable and cost-effective. Reporting to the Technical Engineering Manager, you will provide manufacturing and assembly guidance throughout new product design and prototype iterations and improve design for manufacture initiatives throughout the R&D department.

Alongside new product development, you will be expected to lead R&D projects that provide cost reduction, manufacturing and quality improvements in addition to supporting the continuous improvement of existing production product ranges.

Role Accountabilities
Product design and development

Accountable for ensuring designs throughout the new product development process are suitable for manufacture, adequately assessed and final prototypes are produced and signed off prior to pre-production builds

  • Influence component geometry, tolerance concerns and part standardisation throughout the product design and development process
  • Identify manufacturing, assembly, tooling and material challenges within early product development designs
  • Ensure product designs are practicable, repeatable and manufacturable using the intended manufacturing processes
  • Work alongside the Production Engineering department to ensure that designs conform to efficiency and optimisation driven initiatives within prototype development
Design for manufacture

Ensure products are designed for efficient, repeatable and cost-effective manufacture and assembly

Cross-functional collaboration

Work closely with new product development teams, Production Engineering, Quality, Purchasing and Marketing to ensure successful new product implementation

Engineering standards

Ensure designs comply with engineering standards, legislation and company procedures, liaising with new product development stakeholders

Project support and delivery

Accountable for being the project lead on R&D initiative projects, ensuring that project deadlines are met, relevant stakeholders are involved and project progress is reported
