Job description

SuperDielectrics (SD) is pioneering a breakthrough battery technology designed for the high‑power markets of the future, supporting the global shift to electrification. Our water‑based batteries deliver market‑leading performance through a novel polymer separator, combined with zinc halide electroactive species and carbon‑based porous electrodes.

To accelerate commercialization, SD operates a fully integrated product development model – from advanced materials through to cells, modules and packs – underpinned by in‑house battery management systems.

As a Development Engineer you will play a key role in developing the battery cells and modules, being involved in the design, development and deployment of the cells and modules as well as supporting their testing and manufacturing.

You will work on existing battery cells and modules with a primary focus on optimizing and continuously improving their manufacturing, testing and quality‑control procedures, while also supporting the integration of cells/modules into high‑performance systems and enabling deployment into real‑world applications. Additionally, you will be involved in supporting the development and design of next‑generation cells and modules and their scaling up toward the application/deployment stage.

You will primarily work within the Module team, collaborating closely across engineering, product, application testing and commercial functions to translate innovation into deliverable products.

This is a rare opportunity to join a high‑growth, entrepreneurial business at a pivotal stage. While experience in battery technologies is advantageous, we actively welcome candidates from adjacent fields – bringing fresh perspectives to complex engineering challenges. In return, we offer a world‑class environment to develop deep expertise in next‑generation energy storage.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accountable for the scaling‑up of laboratory cells into large‑format cells, which includes design, assembly, testing and validation activities.
  • Responsible for designing, developing and building compression systems, prototypes and testing fixtures/jigs, for both cells and modules, with either in‑house facilities or external suppliers.
  • Lead the definition, design, testing and implementation of thermal and gas management strategies at cell and module scale.
  • Drive the identification and establishment of methodologies to improve quality control for the manufacturing and assembly of functional and packaging components at cell and module level.
  • Responsible for designing and integrating cell‑to‑module electrical interfaces in collaboration with the Electronics Team.
  • Ownership of the creation and maintenance of high‑quality CAD models and engineering drawings to support packaging, prototyping and manufacturing.
  • Responsible for testing and validating parts and processes and creating process documentation for hand‑over to the technical team.
  • Champion safe working practices, ensuring compliance with internal safety standards, training and engineering best practices.
Ideal Candidate
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline; alternatively, have demonstrable experience in a similar role from a related field of expertise.
  • Demonstrable hands‑on experience scaling products from prototype up to production and deployment.
  • Experience in designing practical, manufacturable, and cost‑efficient parts and assemblies, with strong focus on Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Strong experience with CAD software and creating parts, assemblies and technical drawings for internal or external use.
  • Capability to work on multiple projects at once, while also taking ownership on delivering projects on set deadlines.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and engage with scientific concepts and translate them to engineering criteria.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and drive practical solutions in evolving technical landscapes.
  • Clear and structured communicator, able to document, present and transfer technical knowledge effectively.
  • Collaborative and proactive mindset, with the ability to operate both independently and across functions.
