Job description

Development Engineer


A house builder seeks to appoint a Development Engineer to work across a number of housing developments throughout the North West region.


About the role - Development Engineer


You will provide lean but robust engineering strategies as part of an established, successful land and development team. The role will be working primarily with the land team to de-risk bids and support the due diligence process for land acquisition approval. This would include technical reporting and providing strategies for drainage, cut & fill, retaining walls, foundations, and utilities. Support with groundworks estimating and procurement would also be provided. This would then follow through to supporting planning applications with the necessary technical input and engineering strategy.


Duties and responsibilities:


  1. Ensure all approvals are obtained and information received issued to allow for a programmed start on site.
  2. Work with Land Department to ensure smooth transition of information.
  3. Prepare site viability reports in line with current regulatory requirements for residential development.
  4. Check all drawings and details for accuracy, correctness and commercial suitability.
  5. Liaise with external consultants to ensure deadlines are met.
  6. Apply for and secure statutory body approval of Engineering Design and Ground Investigation.
  7. Attend site visits and meetings to solve issues that arise during the constructions process.
  8. Attend design meetings with the highways and planners to ascertain requirements from a council perspective for new developments.
  9. Work on tenders and pre-start engineering documentation and oversee viability.
  10. Ensure that new regulation requirements are anticipated and incorporated as required.
  11. Procure Site Investigation Information.
  12. Provide provisional assessment of abnormal design requirements.
  13. Monitor progress of the adoption of roads, sewers and public open space areas.
  14. Pursue the reduction and release of outstanding Bonds at the earliest opportunity.
  15. Assist the Engineering Manager to obtain fee quotations from specialist Consultants for all engineering design and technical report requirements.
  16. Provide technical and administrative support to the site teams.
  17. Obtain all required technical approvals in line with programmed site start dates.

Skills and experience:


  1. Experience of technical and engineering aspects of house building design.
  2. An in-depth understanding of Highway & Sewer Standards.
  3. Substantial experience working within a residential housebuilder or equivalent.
  4. Experience of leading the engineering strategy and working in a team.
  5. Value Engineering.
  6. Able to analyse complex data and critically evaluate plans.
  7. Good understanding of budget management.
  8. Able to direct external consultants.
  9. A methodical approach to working practices.
  10. Confident decision maker with pragmatic approach to problem solving.
  11. Supporting the land team with the due diligence review and delivery of technical and engineering information required for land appraisals and acquisition.
  12. HNC or above in Civil Engineering or similar discipline.
  13. Comfortable using engineering related software like AutoCAD, PDS and Microdrainage.
