Job summary

Mitie Care & Custody is seeking a Detention Custody Officer (DCO) to uphold high standards of security and safety while promoting the well-being and dignity of residents at our Immigration Removal Centre. You will need strong interpersonal skills, patience, and professionalism to navigate daily challenges in a diverse environment.

Prior experience with agitated or distressed individuals is beneficial. The role offers continuous support for growth and development within a demanding, 24/7 setting.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in security, custody, customer service, healthcare, military, prison, care or public-facing roles is advantageous but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the safety, security and welfare of residents within the Immigration Removal Centre (IRC).
• Build professional and respectful relationships with residents from diverse backgrounds.
• Monitor resident wellbeing and respond appropriately to welfare, behavioural and security-related incidents.
• Conduct regular patrols, security checks and searches in line with operational procedures.
• Support residents with day-to-day enquiries while treating everyone with dignity and respect.
• Manage challenging situations calmly and professionally, including dealing with individuals who may be distressed, agitated or upset.
• Complete accurate reports, records and incident documentation.
• Escort residents safely around the centre and to external appointments when required.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues and partner agencies to maintain a safe and secure environment.
• Adhere to all policies, procedures, legislation and professional standards.
• Remain flexible to work a rotating shift pattern, including days, nights, weekends and public holidays.
• Participate in mandatory training, including Use of Force and ongoing professional development programmes.
