Designated Professional/Nurse Safeguarding Adults

Are you an experienced Registered Professional or Nurse with excellent safeguarding experience relating to adults and do you have great knowledge of the relevant legislation? In addition, can you think strategically, and lead a programme of work across a system with three local authority areas if so, please do get in contact.

The Integrated Care Board (ICB) is recruiting a Designated Professional/Nurse for Safeguarding Adults to support the delivery of the statutory ICB responsibilities. This role will be supported by a team of Deputy Designated Professionals (All age) and Named GPs for Safeguarding (All-Age).

Although there are changes ahead for ICB's nationally, it is recognised that currently this is a statutory role which must be fulfilled.

Due to hybrid working, applicants are invited from all areas, with an understanding that the successful candidate will be required in the office at least twice a week for team office days and to attend some system meetings in person. This varies week on week and is driven by business need.

Main duties of the job

The Designated Professional for Safeguarding Adults will work closely with the Head of Safeguarding (All age) to provide the strategic leadership and support across the Integrated Care System for Safeguarding Adults, within Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) in line with the Intercollegiate Documents for Safeguarding Adults, the Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and other safeguarding adult related statutory guidance, for example; NHSE Safeguarding Accountability and Assurance Framework and domestic abuse, serous violence duty guidance documents etc.

As the Designated Professional for Safeguarding Adults for the Integrated Care System, the postholder will also provide support, coaching and expert advice to the Deputy Designated Nurses/Professionals within the team.

The Designated Professional for Safeguarding Adults will proactively contribute to the work of the Safeguarding Adult Boards/Partnerships and work closely with other colleagues in the Integrated Care Board to ensure that safeguarding is considered in strategic planning, clinical/professional leadership, innovation, development, procurement, commissioning and the delivery of services to improve the health and wellbeing of the population living in BNSSG.

Job responsibilities

In addition to providing professional leadership for safeguarding adults, the post holder will facilitate improvements in the quality and provision of health services through collaboration of the Integrated Care System; with the local authorities and health partners to ensure that safeguarding and clinical governance practice, policies and procedures are understood and adhered to.

The postholder will also lead with the Head of Safeguarding in seeking quality assurance of safeguarding practice across the health economy in BNSSG, and evidence of learning from statutory safeguarding reviews.

The Designated Professional for Safeguarding Adults will provide expert advice and clinical/professional leadership to the local health providers and partner agencies in relation to health services to safeguard adults at risk.

The postholder will work closely with the Head of Safeguarding (All age) to lead and manage the ICB Safeguarding team, including the Deputy Designated Nurses/Professionals (8a), Named GPs, and business support roles.

The Designated Professional for Safeguarding Adults will support the effective delivery of the ICB statutory safeguarding duties, in collaboration with the ICB Safeguarding Team. As per the Intercollegiate Guidance, this role will be held to account by the Chief Nursing Officer of the ICB.

Person Specification
Knowledge, Training and Experience
  • Educated to masters level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in specialist area.
  • Registered Professional.
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant national policies and implications for practice relating to safeguarding adults.
  • Must have an understanding of the background to and aims of current healthcare policy and appreciate the implications of this on engagement.
  • Experience of leading and managing change in service developments.
  • Experience and understanding of clinical/professional governance, audit, and evidence-based practice.
  • Should have an appreciation of the relationship between the Department of Health, NHSE, the ICB and individual provider and commissioning organisations.
  • Experience in undertaking health investigations for a section 42 enquiry, organisational safeguarding and whole home investigations.
  • Excellent leadership skills in working with multi agencies within Safeguarding Adults.
  • Experience in building and maintaining working relationships to a senior level.
  • Experience in line managing staff and other leadership roles.
  • Detailed understanding of the Care Act 2014 section 42, Mental Capacity Act and DoLs PREVENT, Domestic Abuse and Modern Slavery.
  • Evidence of ongoing personal and professional development.
