Job summary

Red Kite School, part of Acorn Education within Outcomes First Group, is seeking a Design Technology Teacher to create practical, engaging learning experiences for pupils aged 11–18 with SEMH needs.

You will plan lessons that encourage hands-on design, making, testing and problem solving, adapting to individual needs and abilities while fostering confidence and curiosity.

Qualifications

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
• Experience or qualifications in Design Technology.
• Ability to plan and adapt lessons for different needs and abilities.
• Passion for helping children and young people overcome barriers to learning.
• Strong communication and collaboration with colleagues and other professionals.
• Calm, patient and resilient approach when learning is challenging.
• Experience in SEN or specialist education is desirable.

Design. Create. Problem Solve. Help Young People Discover What They Can Do. For some pupils, the opportunity to create something with their own hands can completely change the way they feel about learning. At Red Kite School, we're looking for an enthusiastic and creative Design Technology Teacher who can turn ideas into practical learning experiences and help pupils develop confidence, curiosity and valuable skills for their future. You'll create engaging Design Technology lessons that give pupils opportunities to design, make, experiment and problem solve, adapting learning around individual needs and abilities. This is a role where practical achievement can become a powerful way to re engage a young person with education and show them what they are capable of achieving. Whether you're already teaching within specialist education or you're an experienced mainstream Design Technology Teacher looking for a different kind of teaching career, you'll be supported to develop your skills within our specialist environment.

What you will be doing

• Plan and deliver creative and engaging Design Technology lessons that encourage practical learning and participation
• Give pupils opportunities to develop skills through designing, making, evaluating and problem solving
• Adapt teaching and practical activities around individual learning needs, strengths and interests
• Build positive relationships with pupils, creating an environment where they feel safe to experiment, make mistakes and try again
• Help pupils develop confidence, independence and practical skills alongside their academic learning
• Set meaningful goals, monitor progress and recognise both individual achievements and significant milestones
• Develop and contribute to personalised learning plans, including IEPs and behaviour support strategies
• Work collaboratively with colleagues and wider professionals to provide consistent and individualised support

What You'll Bring

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
• Experience, knowledge or relevant qualifications within Design Technology
• The creativity and practical skills to make learning engaging and meaningful
• The ability to plan and adapt lessons for different needs and abilities
• A genuine passion for helping children and young people overcome barriers to learning
• A calm, patient and resilient approach when pupils find learning challenging
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and other professionals
• The ability to build positive relationships and encourage pupils to recognise their own strengths

Experience within SEN, Autism, SEMH or specialist education is highly desirable, but it is not essential. We also welcome applications from experienced mainstream Design Technology Teachers who are ready to bring their subject expertise into specialist education.

Red Kite School is an independent special school for up to 60 young people aged 11-18 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Opened in September 2024, the school is located in the beautiful market town of Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire.
