Job description

We are looking to strengthen our engineering team with a Design Manager at our @One Alliance, Peterborough office, with hybrid working available. You will lead an engineering team to deliver design solutions for a programme of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and sewage treatment works storm overflows within the west of the Anglian Water region.

The East of England has unique rivers, wetlands, and coastlines, yet it is classified as severely water stressed and faces drought and a degrading natural environment. This is due to a growing economy, the highest rate of new housing development in the UK, climate change, and being a major agricultural producer.

Anglian Water’s purpose is to bring environmental and social prosperity to the East of England through our commitment to Love Every Drop. We have an ambitious £9bn 5-year capital investment programme that aims to provide safe and resilient water supplies, permit sustainable growth, enhance climate change resilience, and protect and improve the natural environment.

To improve protection of our natural environment, water ecosystems, and customers, we have an ambitious sewage storm overflow discharge reduction plan, which is part of our Water Industry National Environmental Programme (WINEP) obligations. This involves reducing discharges from CSOs and sewage treatment works storm overflows through a combination of conventional engineered solutions and nature-based solutions.

As part of this role, you will:

  1. Be part of the @One Alliance, a successful, award-winning, and progressive water sector capital delivery organization.
  2. Deliver a programme of CSOs and sewage treatment works storm overflows, valued at approximately £100M.
  3. Collaborate with Water Recycling West Treatment Design Managers to develop holistic catchment-based solutions that address network issues and consider impacts on treatment works.
  4. Develop innovative ways of working focusing on outcomes to reduce carbon and increase efficiency, using the PAS 2080 hierarchy: Avoid, Switch, and Improve.
  5. Be technically proficient in designing solutions and leading your engineering team.
  6. Manage the Water Recycling West Storm Overflow design team in delivering catchment and pipeline solutions.
  7. Lead the development and management of Engineering Project Plans to control scope, programme, cost, risk, and resources.
  8. Provide design method guidance in collaboration with Discipline Lead Engineers.
  9. Assess project complexity and assign competent engineering resources accordingly.
  10. Implement design quality procedures with BIM Programme Manager to ensure first-time right quality.
  11. Support engagement, selection, contracting, and management of suppliers and subcontractors for design input.
  12. Ensure designs consider health & safety, environmental, construction, procurement, customer, and operational factors.
  13. Lead engineering design meetings and hold team members accountable.

Essential qualifications and experience:

  • An engineering or equivalent degree.
  • Experience with wastewater assets, including gravity sewers, foul rising mains, pumping stations, attenuation tanks, and associated construction techniques.
  • Preferably chartered or working towards chartered status.
  • Preferable experience in water-sector assets and capital projects.

Personal qualities:

  • Integrity: Foster compliance with ethics, respect, and positive reputation.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Promote effective stakeholder engagement.
  • Emotional intelligence: Demonstrate leadership understanding others' needs.
  • Diversity & Inclusion: Champion these values.
  • Development & Learning: Identify team training needs and development plans.
  • Decision-making: Support complex decision processes.
