A little more about your role…

As a Design Manager at WSP in the PMCM Rail team, you will be responsible for enabling the delivery of complex rail projects of regional, national, and international significance. A Design Manager will lead in the integration of multi-disciplinary design teams, ensuring project delivery of high-quality, timely, and budget-compliant outcomes.

Our Design Managers are adaptable individuals with an innovative mindset, willing to take on new challenges and comfortable working within significant and complex projects or programmes. We collaborate closely with external clients and internal multi-disciplinary teams, utilizing WSP offices, client offices, and/or site locations to deliver projects of strategic regional and national importance.

Your Team

We are a diverse, inclusive, and enthusiastic team of Project, Commercial, and Design Managers working in the Rail sector, focused on delivering solutions for our clients. Our passion is creating and shaping the built environment through tailored project delivery, striving to be the best in class.

Your Role

  • Leading in the integration of multi-disciplinary design teams, ensuring project delivery of high-quality, timely, and budget-compliant designs.
  • Coordinating relevant disciplines through project meetings and workshops, resolving critical issues promptly, and ensuring safety, functional, and regulatory compliance.
  • Establishing robust processes and procedures to manage the project in conjunction with the client’s team.
  • Technical oversight
  • Ensuring design packages meet safety (Safe By Design), functional, and regulatory requirements.
  • Analyzing, processing, and responding to design transmittals including drawings, specifications, reports, and other documents.
  • Client liaison
  • Developing and managing client and stakeholder relationships through effective listening and influencing skills.
  • Quality Assurance
  • Ensuring quality management processes are in place to deliver high-standard design work.
  • Itemizing scope of services, client briefing schedules, documentation, and assessing deliverables against industry standards.
  • Commercial and Risk Management
  • Reviewing and evaluating quotations to ensure alignment with scope, budget, and client requirements.
  • Managing changes and delays, resolving or mitigating issues, and improving project management processes.
  • Identifying and mitigating risks related to design and construction phases.
  • Handling RFIs, early warnings, and communications to reduce project risks.
  • Project Planning
  • Leading technical planning to ensure timely, efficient design delivery.
  • Updating design delivery programs, resourcing, and instructions, with a thorough understanding of project scope and responsibilities.
  • Documentation
  • Maintaining accurate records and action logs, holding relevant parties accountable.
  • Ensuring documentation is maintained per project requirements.
  • Innovation and Efficiency
  • Driving innovative design solutions and implementing processes to enhance efficiency and productivity.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A degree in a relevant engineering or management discipline (such as project or construction management, engineering, science, or building).
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional body, or nearing completion of this status, is advantageous.
  • ARB/RIBA/MICE/MIET/APM/PMI/Six Sigma certifications are beneficial.
  • Experience in design or project management with an architectural background.
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams and liaising with stakeholders.
  • Experience working on significant projects with demonstrated client-side delivery (design and build).
  • Experience with organizations such as Network Rail, HS2, TfGM, and other rail entities is advantageous.
  • Proven ability to manage within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Curiosity, solution-focus, and responsiveness to client issues.

On-site presence required (3 days per week).
