About the role

Design Manager – Place-Based Thinking

Location: Anglian Water Offices, Thorpe Wood House, Peterborough

Organisation: Balfour Beatty – @one Alliance

Are you ready to shape the future of infrastructure design and drive transformative change in the water industry?

@one Alliance is a partnership of eight leading companies—Anglian Water, Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Binnies, MMB, MWH Treatment, Skanska, and SWECO—delivering over half of Anglian Water’s capital investment programme. As we enter AMP8, our most ambitious Asset Management Period, we are preparing to undertake our largest project yet. This is a unique opportunity to drive industry change, set global standards, and foster career growth.

We are seeking a visionary Design Manager to lead the development and delivery of innovative, outcome-focused design solutions. In this key role, you will champion sustainable, low-carbon engineering practices and foster a collaborative, high-performance design culture.

What you'll be doing

Key responsibilities:

Design Management
  • Lead multidisciplinary design teams to deliver efficient, high-quality solutions across major infrastructure projects.
  • Work closely with technical leads and the BIM Manager to define and monitor design standards, quality benchmarks, and governance protocols.
  • Engage with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure design excellence and compliance with health, safety, environmental, and operational requirements.
Project Delivery
  • Collaborate across @one function to ensure timely, budget-conscious delivery of value-optimised solutions.
  • Drive proactive risk management and support continuous value engineering initiatives.
Health, Safety & Compliance
  • Fulfil Principal Designer responsibilities in line with CDM Regulations.
  • Ensure robust design risk assessments and the production of comprehensive H&S documentation.
Team Leadership & Development
  • Inspire and lead a diverse team of engineers and specialists, cultivating a culture of innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Strategically allocate resources, identify capability gaps, and support talent development and recruitment.
Innovation & Transformation
  • Champion the transition to AMP8, with a strong focus on digital transformation, sustainability, and standardisation.
  • Lead innovation in carbon reduction, digital modelling (e.g., 3D, 4D), and the application of cutting-edge design methodologies.
Who we're looking for

What we are looking for:

  • Strong experience in the design of wastewater assets and infrastructure.
  • A track record of delivering complex engineering solutions with a focus on sustainability, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven leadership skills with experience in team development, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative delivery models.
  • In-depth understanding of CDM Regulations and commitment to H&S best practices throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Passion for innovation, carbon reduction, and the integration of digital tools in the design process.
