The Opportunity:
Laing O'Rourke have an opportunity for a Mechanical Design Manager to join the team on our portfolio of prison projects based initially from our Sale, Manchester office. Current projects are based in Lancashire and Buckinghamshire where the role will ultimately be based when the project moves to site.

A Laing O'Rourke Design Manager ensures that all design information is reviewed and delivered in line with the design management procedures for completeness and compliance with contractual obligations, including factors such as programme, buildability, safety, maintenance and technical suitability. In addition, the Design Manager oversees the production, control and distribution of design information at different project stages and ensures regular progress reporting of the design is in place.

The Laing O'Rourke Design Manager is a senior member of the Design Job Family and Technical Function, which is there to ensure technical excellence, assurance and performance across all projects and opportunities from pre-project, early engagement and work winning through to detailed delivery. All of our designers are part of our Engineering Enterprise which aims to maximise and realise the potential of design to increase certainty on our projects.

What will the role look like?

  • Supporting our consultant teams to maximise their effectiveness and value optimisation in the provision of effective integrated design solutions that meet our clients' business needs (strategies and budgets).
  • Maximising the effectiveness of consultant relationships.
  • Reviewing design delivery to enhance quality of solutions and efficiency of design, procurement, manufacturing, assembly, commissioning and handover of total engineering excellent solutions for our clients.
  • Supporting our consultants in adopting LOR's design processes, deliver with rigour and quality project management processes and to ensure effective collaboration throughout the supply chain (using appropriate tools for this including, but not limited to, BIM/Digital Engineering).
  • Capturing business knowledge and capability enabling continuous improvement, innovation and improved capability towards an Engineering Enterprise.

What skills & experience are we looking for?

  • Experience of prisons / justice projects
  • Alternatively a strong modular construction background
  • Experience end to end in managing design - from concept to handover.
  • First degree in Mechanical Discipline. Other appropriate construction related qualification plus design related experience.
  • Sector specialism as well as deep and broad experience managing the design of construction or building services projects.
