Design Manager - London
SSA are currently working with a leading M&E contractor based in London, searching for a Design Manager. Based in London and reporting to the Design and Engineering Director, you will be responsible for the effective performance of the design team and its ability to deliver design projects for the business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the overall strategy and resource planning for the design team, including the production of all design deliverables.
- Collaborate with lead engineers to ensure proper resourcing, task delegation, and quality control measures are implemented.
- Oversee the team's work-winning assistance, resourcing, and timely review input delivery.
- Manage design cost control across all projects, monitoring and reporting potential overruns, and implementing mitigation measures.
- Lead the planning and execution of the QA & design verification process for external 3rd party consultants across projects.
- Develop and refine the company's Design Project Management Pathway QA procedures for internal and external design deliverables.
- Ensure inherited concept designs are technically reviewed for suitability before design development.
- Implement control measures to address non-compliant or unsuitable designs.
- Challenge internal and external design outputs to optimize efficiency and value, increasing profitability.
- From bid inception to project completion, assist in de-risking projects by ensuring correct inputs into the R&O schedule.
- Track and communicate changes effectively, ensuring proper implementation.
- Support the business in addressing technical challenges and legacy issues.
- Maintain regular communication with team members and report progress to the Design & Engineering Director monthly.
- Report on significant events or issues as needed to inform decision-making.
- Ensure team members have and contribute to their professional development plans, facilitating training and growth opportunities.
- Nurture talent within the team, coaching and encouraging skill and responsibility development.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 10 years of design-specific experience in the UK MEP Building Services industry, including at least 2 years in a senior leadership role.
- Thorough understanding of all BSRIA work stages.
- Proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships with clients and internal teams, optimizing opportunities and profitability.
- Ability to foster relationships across departments and enhance the visibility and capabilities of the design team.

Ideal Candidate:
- Qualified to at least HNC level in Building Services or similar.
- Degree in Building Services or related field (desirable).
- IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent certification.
- Over 5 years in a similar role.
