Joining Arup

The Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a Principal Design Manager who is looking to rise to the challenge of working in the data centre sector and becoming a permanent member of our friendly, accommodating and creative Building Engineering Team.

As an integral member of our multi-disciplinary team, you will work alongside Engineers and Architects to deliver design packages from initial brief through scheme & detail design to installation and commissioning support. You will be in charge of managing the successful delivery of the projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead development of a design programme in association with Technical and Discipline Leads, recording information required and assumptions. Lead the monitoring and reporting of the programme.
  • Co-ordinate and agree definitions of package scope and technical delivery of the packages. Manage the project delivery to meet the scope by controlling change, budgets and resource.
  • Facilitate communication and coordination between stakeholders to foster positive and collaborative relationships, internally and externally.
  • Lead project commercial activities generally e.g. invoicing, creating job numbers, project reporting, managing dashboards.
  • Support the Principal Designer (CDM-PD) in planning, managing, monitoring, and coordinating health and safety during the pre-construction phase, ensuring compliance with CDM 2015 regulations.
  • Advocate and Champion for Arup’s Emerging BRPD Design Services: Promote and support the growth of in-house BRPDs by developing, streamlining, and standardising processes and project communication.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for a Design Manager with excellent communication and delivery skills who enjoys working on fast-paced and highly technical projects, working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary design teams.

You will have a passion for design and an appreciation of all discipline roles within the design process. You will have direct experience of delivering high-spec, large-scale projects. You will have a strong sense of commitment and appetite for overcoming challenges in order to see significant, high-profile projects through to completion.

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • Has worked in design management with a background in Data Centre projects but also including mission critical facilities such as healthcare, manufacturing, aviation, laboratory and industrial facilities will be considered.
  • Is degree qualified and holder of a relevant professional qualification (ARB, RIBA, IEng or CEng).
  • Has strong commercial and client facing skills and be able to represent Arup externally with a background in project delivery.
  • Has background in leading multi-disciplinary design teams including external sub-consultants.
  • Has background in working with contractors for complex packages.
  • Has expertise in managing scope and programme, dealing with multiple priorities, delivering high quality technical deliverables.
