MWH Treatment is looking to strengthen our Engineering team with a Design Manager for our Anglian Water region on the Cambridge relocation project. Based in the Peterborough & Cambridge area, with the design currently at outline status, you’ll manage the delivery of the final optioneering stage and detailed design for construction. You’ll ensure all technical outputs meet the project requirements within the agreed timescales and provide technical support during assembly as needed.

With a large team to lead, you’ll operate in a visible and supportive manner, being recognized as a Technical Engineering expert who can provide sound and constructive advice.

The Project

The Cambridge relocation project involves designing & building a modern, low-carbon wastewater treatment plant to serve the community and environment. This plant will recycle water and nutrients, produce green energy, and support the sustainable growth of Greater Cambridge.

Known as the Cambridge Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) Relocation Project, Anglian Water collaborates with partners including MMB & Skanska to deliver this significant opportunity. The relocation will free the current WWTP site for development into North East Cambridge, a new low-carbon city district with around 8,350 homes and 15,000 jobs planned over 20 years.

Key responsibilities in the role will include:

1. Take full responsibility for the successful delivery of non-infrastructure projects, ensuring adherence to scope, schedule, and budget.
2. Manage and coordinate the final optioneering stage and detailed design for construction, ensuring technical excellence and innovative engineering solutions.
3. Manage design delivery according to the design management plan and brief, including client requirements, cost, programme, standards, BIM strategy, and contracts.
4. Monitor and report on design progress weekly and monthly, taking actions to maintain delivery timelines, cost control, quality, and safety.
5. Collaborate with engineers, designers, contractors, and stakeholders to drive project objectives.
6. Lead and inspire a team of professionals, fostering collaboration and high performance.
7. Identify and mitigate technical risks, implementing strategies to overcome challenges.
8. Ensure the scope of solutions is clearly defined and agreed, with designs compliant with client brief, legal, and technical standards.
9. Develop innovative approaches to reduce carbon footprint, increase biodiversity, and embrace digital technologies.
10. Oversee technical deliverables, ensuring timely production, cost management, and controlled technical change.
11. Ensure engineering outputs meet industry standards and client expectations.
