Job summary

Carrington West is seeking an experienced Design Manager to join a leading construction business in Birmingham. You will own the design management process across the project lifecycle and ensure timely delivery of design information.

You will work with internal teams, consultants, subcontractors and clients, guiding design outputs to meet programme, budget and quality expectations, whilst mentoring Design Coordinators and ensuring compliance with standards.

Qualifications

• Previous experience as a Design Manager within the construction industry.
• Strong knowledge of design management processes across construction projects.
• Experience managing consultants, subcontractors, and multidisciplinary design teams.
• Excellent communication, coordination, and stakeholder management skills.
• The ability to prioritise workloads and manage multiple project deadlines.
• A proactive approach to problem‑solving and risk management.
• Relevant construction or engineering qualifications would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Manage design consultants, specialist consultants, and design subcontractors to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of all design information required for construction.
• Lead and support Design Coordinators, providing mentoring, guidance, and technical expertise across multiple projects.
• Review and contribute to Employer’s Requirements and Contractor’s Proposals, ensuring compatibility and compliance throughout the design process.
• Oversee and support design coordination during the construction phase, resolving design issues and ensuring effective communication between all stakeholders.
• Chair, coordinate, and minute design meetings, tracking actions through to completion.
• Monitor design programmes, identifying risks and implementing solutions to maintain project milestones.
• Collaborate with project, commercial, and site teams to ensure design outputs align with programme, budget, and quality expectations.
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards, and client specifications.

The Role
