Job description

Balmoral Tanks Ltd is a leading European engineering design and manufacturing company. Following significant investment in both our people and facilities, we now offer what is believed to be the most comprehensive single-source range of tank products in the EU.

We're looking for a Design Manager to lead our engineering design function, delivering bespoke bulk storage solutions across industries including water, energy, and industrial markets.

The Role

Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will lead the design drawing function and act as the engineering authority across our project portfolio. This role is accountable for delivering right-first-time, on-time design outputs, supporting the full project lifecycle from concept through to installation.

You will drive continuous improvement in design processes and products, maintaining governance, standards, and innovation while preserving the bespoke nature of our solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the design function, allocating resources across projects and product development
  • Ensure on-time, right-first-time design release in line with stage-gate processes and customer expectations
  • Own design change governance, including engineering adjudication and root cause analysis
  • Drive design for manufacture and installation (DFM/DFI) to ensure cost-effective production
  • Reduce design-related non-conformance (NCRs) and embed lessons learned into standard practice
  • Develop and maintain a design standards library, calculation templates, and knowledge base
  • Provide technical leadership for structural steel designs in line with British Standards, Eurocodes, and international standards
  • Act as a client-facing technical authority, resolving complex design challenges
  • Support internal teams including sales, production, contracts, and installation
  • Manage external design partners and suppliers
  • Monitor and report on design performance metrics (delivery, quality, cost, efficiency)
  • Develop team capability through training, innovation, and adoption of tools such as BIM and AI
About You
  • Degree in Structural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Chartered (or working towards)
  • Proven experience leading engineering/design teams
  • Strong background in manufacturing, steel structures, or bespoke projects
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
Why Join Us?
  • Lead a critical function in a growing engineering business
  • Work on diverse, bespoke projects
  • Be part of a "Right First-Time" culture focused on quality and innovation
What We Offer

  • Access to the Balmoral Benefits Hub
  • Discounts on restaurants, holidays, and major supermarkets
  • Cycle-to-work scheme
  • Employee Assistance Programme, including confidential support and counselling
  • Profit-related bonus
  • Increasing annual leave entitlement, with the option to purchase more
