Opportunity for a Design Manager at a Reputable Tier One Contractor

Located in the heart of Devon, this contractor specializes in interior fit-out, refurbishments, and construction of commercial buildings in sectors such as Education, Student Accommodation, Sports Centres, Leisure, and Healthcare.

As a Design Manager, you will oversee the development and control of designs across one or more projects. Your role involves adding value while ensuring buildability and compliance with statutory requirements.

You will collaborate with project stakeholders—including architects, engineers, contractors, and clients—to establish project requirements, objectives, and design criteria. Additionally, you will share your expertise by mentoring and guiding team members.

Key Responsibilities

1. Manage the design phase from concept to construction documentation, ensuring compliance with project goals, codes, regulations, and standards such as fire safety, planning, and building control.
2. Participate in selecting and procuring design solutions, including modern construction methods, materials, finishes, and sustainable technologies, aligning with project specifications, budgets, and timelines.
3. Organize and prepare for design reviews to monitor progress, identify risks or deviations, and implement corrective actions.
4. Collaborate with architects, engineers, and other professionals to develop comprehensive design plans, drawings, and specifications that meet project requirements.
5. Coordinate external design consultants, review their work, and provide feedback to maintain design integrity and quality.

Requirements

• Previous experience as a Design Manager with a main contractor.
• Strong communication and negotiation skills.
• Technical knowledge of construction design principles across architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical disciplines.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook), Microsoft Project, and design software such as Asta, Primavera, or Bluebeam.
