Job summary

JHR Recruitment is representing a well-established construction contractor in Plymouth, seeking an experienced Design Manager to lead the design process from pre-construction to completion. The role collaborates with a Senior Design Manager, Contracts Manager and Project Managers within an established team and reports to the Head of Operations.

You will manage design on £5m–£15m projects, coordinate information between clients, consultants and site teams, and ensure buildability and compliance

Qualifications

• Proven Design Manager experience in main contracting.
• Experience managing design on £5m-£15m projects.
• Strong technical knowledge across new build/refurbishment.
• Excellent communication and coordination across stakeholders.
• Degree in construction/architecture/engineering or equivalent.
• Full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Manage the design process from pre-construction through to completion.
• Coordinate design information between clients, consultants, subcontractors and site team.
• Review and manage design programmes to align with construction requirements.
• Identify design risks and address buildability, compliance and value engineering.
• Chair and attend design team meetings, track actions and outstanding information.
• Ensure compliance with Building Regulations, planning conditions and industry standards.
• Support wider commercial and operational teams with technical input throughout lifecycle.

We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established and successful construction contractor based in Plymouth, delivering high-quality projects ranging from £5m to £15m in value. Due to continued growth, they are now seeking an experienced Design Manager to join their established construction team based in their Plymouth office.

Design Manager Role

• Office-based role working on projects ranging from £5m to £15m in value
• Working alongside a Senior Design Manager, Contracts Manager, and Project Managers within an established construction team
• Reporting into the Head of Operations
• Managing the design process from pre-construction through to completion
• Coordinating design information between clients, consultants, subcontractors, and the site team
• Reviewing and managing design programmes to ensure information is issued in line with construction requirements
• Identifying design risks and ensuring buildability, compliance, and value engineering opportunities are addressed
• Chairing and attending design team meetings, tracking actions and outstanding information
• Ensuring compliance with Building Regulations, planning conditions, and relevant industry standards
• Supporting the wider commercial and operational teams with technical design input throughout the project lifecycle

Design Manager Requirements

• Proven experience as a Design Manager within a main contracting environment
• Experience managing design on projects in the £5m - £15m range
• Strong technical knowledge across new build and/or refurbishment projects
• Excellent communication and coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple stakeholders
• Degree qualified in a relevant construction, architecture, or engineering discipline (or equivalent industry experience)
• Full UK driving licence
