With a strong understanding of the design management function within a main contractor organisation, you will be able to lead the design process from start to finish. You should have a technical design background and be a problem-solving decision maker.
You will be an excellent communicator across all levels and capable of negotiating effectively with both client and supply chain teams.
With an excellent eye for detail, you will be passionate about quality and good design, whilst understanding BECK's contractual obligations. You will actively manage sub-contractors, sub-consultants, and the client team to ensure responsibilities are met without exposing the business to unnecessary health and safety, financial, or delay risks.
Being a proactive multitasker, you will prioritize activities for yourself and others, work to tight deadlines, and do what is necessary to ensure project success.

- Delivering coordinated, accurate, and timely construction information.
- Identifying and highlighting changes through the design process.
- Carrying out design risk management.
Main Responsibilities
Tasks and how they should be delivered:
- Produce a design responsibility matrix.
- Identify and design out risks, input into the design risk schedule.
- Challenge buildability and cost-effectiveness of consultant and subcontractor designs.
- Set agendas, chair, and minute design meetings.
- Manage client change via commenting process, highlighting and recording changes.
- Assemble and manage the Design Deliverables Schedule to ensure timely release of design information.
- Provide technical support and design-led solutions to the site production team.
- Coordinate between packages through meetings and drawing comments.
- Assist in developing and maintaining the design programme.
- Assist in producing O&Ms and as-built drawings.
- Manage project document control processes and systems.
- Participate in sub-consultant appointments and monitor performance.
- Ensure compliance with statutory authorities and planning requirements.
- Assist surveyor with procurement of design responsibilities, review returns, and lead design-related interviews.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with client and consultant teams.
- Line manage design coordinators.
- Engage in personal development through CPD and training.
- Manage design queries via input in RFI process, written and verbal communication.
- Review drawings for errors and omissions.
- Manage information schedules and ensure proper drawing approval procedures.
- Be an expert in the client’s brief and employer’s requirements.
- Manage subcontractor design programmes, highlighting delays or risks.
- Lead MEPH co-ordination workshops with relevant parties.
- Manage sample sign-off processes in line with programme.
Pre-contract Tasks, if required:
- Manage pre-contract design phase and coordinate external consultants.
- Ensure tender design satisfies employer’s requirements.
- Identify and resolve design risks during tender period.
- Encourage innovative, cost-effective design solutions.
- Attend tender launch meetings and site visits.
- Manage information flow between all parties.
- Maintain drawing register of tender documents.
- Attend design development meetings.
- Review specialist subcontractor quotes.
- Prepare Contractor’s Proposals document.
- Review Contractor’s Proposals prior to submission.
- Participate in tender adjudication and post-tender interviews.
- Update Contractor’s Proposals to reflect agreed prices and requirements.
