The role & about the client:
ITS Building People are recruiting on behalf of a well-established contractor for an experienced and versatile Design Manager (M&E) to join their team. This role is focused on a major refurbishment project and offers the opportunity to take a lead role in delivering the mechanical and electrical design from RIBA Stage 3 through to Stage 6.
Based in the client s St Albans office (applicants must live within a 20-mile radius), the role will involve collaboration with in-house M&E, architectural, and structural consultants, as well as external design teams and suppliers. You ll also carry out site visits to Earls Court and design offices as needed.
This is a long-term role expected to run until October 2026, with the potential for ongoing work on future projects beyond that date.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Manage and coordinate M&E design across all project stages (RIBA 3 6)
  • Ensure designs meet Client Employers Requirements (ERs)
  • Organise and minute design meetings, and maintain the design programme
  • Conduct and coordinate site surveys with the design team
  • Drive value engineering (VE) and monitor its implementation
  • Liaise with specialist suppliers and manage technical information flow
  • Oversee drawing review and approval through the management system
  • Support procurement planning and assist with project scheduling
  • Manage commissioning and phased handovers with the site team
  • Ensure quality control, including snagging and completion of O&M / H&S files
  • Maintain the client s PC checklist and provide regular progress reports
The ideal candidate will have/be:
  • A qualification in Building Services Engineering or similar
  • At least 10 years experience in M&E design management
  • A strong background in refurbishment and design-and-build projects
  • Proficient in managing consultants and technical documentation
  • Knowledge of HTM (Health Technical Memoranda) desirable
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
