Building a sustainable tomorrow

BAM Nuttall is recruiting experienced Design Managers to join the infrastructure business, based at our Kilsyth or Inverness, Scotland offices. The roles will be within existing teams, working on projects to support the transition to sustainable energy and deliver civil infrastructure.

Working closely with project delivery teams and our design partners, you will manage the design process to deliver safe, technically compliant, cost-efficient and coordinated design packages, during pre-construction and project delivery stages.

The roles require liaison with clients, external design consultants, supply chain partners, project delivery teams, digital construction specialists and other relevant stakeholders, creating a collaborative environment to deliver design information that meets project requirements. You will manage the design information release, production and approval of technical drawings, chair design workshops, coordinate complex design packages, and validate design details, adding value to the construction process. Providing expert guidance and technical support, you will work closely with both clients and project teams to identify and mitigate risks, as well as ensuring compliance with all statutory, legal, and planning requirements and promoting the adoption of modern methods of construction.

Your work environment

  • BAM operates a flexible working policy
  • People are at the heart of what we do at Bam. We recognise that creating a diverse and inclusive environment that nurtures our employees and encourages them to bring their best and whole self to work is crucial. We're on an exciting journey to get us there by recruiting the very best talent to join us regardless of race, colour, religion, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability or other characteristics.

Your mission

  • Ensuring all design outputs meet project BIM requirements, e.g., Exchange Information Requirements (EIR), and implementing a 3D design delivery strategy to meet the project BIM Execution Plan (BEP) requirements.
  • Performing reviews of technical proposals and deliverables.
  • Developing and maintaining an awareness of SHE hazards and associated risks and demonstrating a commitment to eliminate or minimise those risks by design
  • Review and management of design programmes, monitoring and reporting via programme updates, trackers & progress meetings
  • Preparing, executing and monitoring the information delivery plan. Manage task team TIDPs and the MIDP where required.
  • Identifying opportunities and working with project teams, design consultants and supply chain partners to improve the design by considering how to improve safety, enhance buildability, improve quality, and provide best value compliant solutions.
  • Co-ordinating the whole design process, proactively managing design interfaces, risk, change and technical output
  • Organising and chairing design co-ordination and design progress meetings with the design team and supply chain, ensuring that design risk assessments are produced.
  • Contributing to the setting up of the project common data environment (CDE), and record, distribute, process, and monitor all design activities through project CDE.

Who are we looking for?

  • Degree qualification in civil engineering or equivalent
  • Professionally qualified, preferably Chartered Engineer
  • Practical experience of harmonising design and quality requirements with buildability and programme requirements, and a strong desire to problem solve are essential.
  • Knowledge of design procedures and standards
  • Experience in design and/or engineering management of civil engineering infrastructure and buildings, with knowledge of the work process in design offices through successful experience of design delivery coordination, ideally including MEP, Fire and Security, MEICA etc.
  • Promote the use of 3D modelling workflows and BIM, including facilitating design reviews using model-based tools.
  • Ability to interrogate digital design models, manage coordination, raise issues to contribute towards the generation of clash reports for improved quality, safety and reduced rework, supported by the project BIM Manager.
  • A wide and varied experience of the construction process through concept and detailed design to construction phase and handover, and understanding of the planning, management and technical skills necessary to undertake the role.
  • Excellent communication skills, both at the personal level and more formal reporting
  • A desire to constantly learn, improve and share knowledge and experience
  • Ability to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment
  • A good commercial understanding of contracts, procurement routes and risk management.
  • Prior experience in projects on energy networks, HVDC schemes or related disciplines will be an advantage.
  • The role will require a can-do and collaborative approach, coupled with strong leadership and management skills
  • Enthusiastic team player, able to listen, understand, engage and motivate, and with confidence to make decisions when required.

  • Competitive salary
  • A wide range of family-friendly policies
  • Company car/car allowance/travel allowance

  • Private healthcare
  • Life assurance
  • 26 days holiday
