Job Description Overview

Our Project Delivery Practice is looking for an experienced Design Manager to join our Epsom and South East team. You will coordinate defined design work packages, single-discipline teams on larger projects or smaller multidisciplinary projects from inception through to completion. Working closely with the Project Manager, discipline leads, clients and delivery partners, you will help establish clear design requirements, coordinate technical interfaces, manage design risk and change, and support safe, buildable and assured outcomes to agreed programme, cost and quality requirements within your assigned scope. You will have opportunities to work across our infrastructure markets, with the current project pipeline particularly focused on Water, Nuclear, Defence and Energy.

Your role

Coordinate the delivery of defined design work packages, single-discipline teams on larger projects or smaller multidisciplinary projects from inception through to completion, within the assigned scope. Contribute to the Design Management Plan for the assigned scope and implement agreed updates, obtaining appropriate input and sign-off from discipline leads and supporting its alignment with the Project Execution Plan. Support confirmation of the design requirements, scope, deliverables, interfaces and responsibilities for the assigned scope, and support agreement of programme milestones and model release dates. Support the development and coordination of the Basis of Design, multidisciplinary deliverables, technical interfaces, design reviews and approvals, securing the required discipline input and sign-off and maintaining appropriate records and configuration control. Apply agreed quality assurance and quality control processes, ensuring outputs for the assigned scope comply with the design brief, client requirements, contractual obligations and applicable standards. Identify and monitor technical, safety, commercial and programme risks within the assigned scope, support their management through relevant design risk processes and elevate complex or significant matters to senior colleagues. Monitor progress, resource demand and expenditure for the assigned scope, identify emerging issues and provide clear delivery information to support Project Manager decisions and timely corrective action. Identify scope change and potential commercial or programme impacts early, supporting timely assessment, notification and management under the relevant contractual arrangements, including NEC3 or NEC4 where applicable. Develop and maintain productive relationships with clients, stakeholders, contractors, delivery partners, and multidisciplinary colleagues, facilitating decisions and ensuring actions are closed promptly. Coordinate discipline input to the BIM Execution Plan and promote effective use of the agreed common data environment, digital tools, models, and project information. Support construction-stage delivery by coordinating responses to technical queries, design change, non-conformances, commissioning, handover and as-built information. Promote health, safety, wellbeing, sustainable design and Net Zero principles throughout design and delivery. Contribute technical content to bids and proposals, identify opportunities for additional work and capture evidence of innovation, improvements and lessons learned. Mentor junior colleagues, share good practice and contribute to capability development and continuous improvement across the Project Delivery Practice. Travel to client offices and project sites across the UK may be required, depending on assignment needs. Full-time, part-time, and flexible working arrangements may be considered, subject to role and project requirements.

About you

Essential Relevant experience in design management, engineering management, technical coordination or a comparable infrastructure delivery role. Experience leading defined design work packages, single-discipline teams or smaller multidisciplinary projects across a range of project or design stages. Broad technical competence in your own discipline and a sound understanding of multidisciplinary interfaces, systems integration and technical assurance. Experience coordinating design deliverables, reviews, approvals, requirements, interfaces, and technical information. An understanding of project scope, programme, budget, risk, quality, change, and commercial arrangements, with the judgement to elevate matters outside your authority. Experience building effective relationships with clients, stakeholders, contractors, and multidisciplinary delivery teams. Strong organisational, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical matters clearly. A collaborative leadership style, good judgement, and the ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining safety, quality and delivery requirements. A relevant professional qualification, with good progress toward professional recognition. The ability to travel to client offices and project sites across the UK when required. Desirable Chartered status in a relevant profession. Experience working under NEC3 or NEC4 contracts and managing design-related early warnings, change and programme impacts. Experience in one or more of water, nuclear, defence, energy, aviation, rail stations, or urban development. Knowledge of BIM, common data environments, digital collaboration, and 3D model-based design coordination. Practical experience of the Construction Design and Management Regulations and design risk management. Experience supporting construction, commissioning, operational readiness, or project handover. Experience contributing to bids, fee estimates, resource plans, or technical proposals. Experience working with distributed teams, delivery partners, or global delivery centres.
