Freelance Design Manager - Pre - Construction role Custodial and MOJ experience advantageous
Location: Manchester
Contract Type: Freelance temporary contract
Duration: 6 months initially
Project Value: £75m
Project Type: New Build mainly, also including extension and refurbishment elements

We are seeking an experienced Freelance Design Manager to join our team on a high-profile Prison project. The project is a new build young offenders institute with refurbishment and extension elements to it.

Role Overview:
As the Design Manager, you will act as the key liaison between the design and site teams. Your primary responsibility will be to coordinate and chase design information from the consultants, ensure timely issue of drawings, and develop practical, buildable solutions with the site and design teams.

Key Responsibilities:
Manage and coordinate all design information across disciplines.

Liaise with consultants, subcontractors, and in-house teams to resolve design issues.

Ensure drawings and specifications are issued to site on time.

Assist with design workshops and technical reviews to ensure buildability.

Track and manage design changes, RFIs, and technical submittals.

Work closely with the site team to produce and review working drawings.

Monitor compliance with client and statutory requirements.

Requirements:
Proven experience as a Design Manager on similar large-scale new build projects.

Strong technical understanding of custodial and prison projects

Ability to read and interpret complex drawings and specifications.

Hands-on, proactive approach to resolving design issues.

Excellent communication and coordination skills.

Availability to work on-site or attend regular site meetings.
