Job summary

VVB Engineering is seeking a Design Manager to supervise mechanical, electrical, public health, fire and telecom design on large Power, Utilities and Infrastructure projects in the UK. You will plan, direct and coordinate design activities and manage a team of engineers and BIM/CAD specialists on multiple projects.

You will represent the design on the project, coordinate with the Client and supply chain, and ensure design work aligns with project budgets, schedules and quality requirements.

Qualifications

  • Applies the technical skills required to manage production of Engineering and Design deliverables for the project, including integration with other functions, on multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of engineering and design work processes and associated compliance.
  • Has project development experience in managing the production of scope documents, budgets, schedules, and material quantities, and developing project execution plans.
  • Proficiency in project planning tasks, i.e., providing input to Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 project programmes/schedules.
  • Proficiency in engineering and design performance management and reporting tasks.
  • Ability to manage people to meet goals or to complete tasks for the project on multiple projects while meeting budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Proficiency in Low and High Voltage (up to 33kV) power distribution system design and engineering and the associated HVAC support in Power, Utilities, Infrastructure Sectors.
  • Reviews and approves key engineering drawings, philosophies, system studies/calculations.
  • Knowledge of application and coordination of 2-D and 3-D Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools such as BIM on a project.
  • Exposure to BIM and design modelling standards.
  • Familiarity with CDM Regulations 2015 together with experience of undertaking a ‘Designer’ role.
  • Familiarity with 18th Edition IEE Wiring Regulation and Electricity at Works Regulations 1989.
  • Substantial experience in a ‘Design Manager role’ within Power, Utilities, Infrastructure Design and Engineering projects.
  • Previous experience on Low to High Voltage (33kV) design and engineering projects.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the design activities Mechanical, Electrical, Public Health, Fire and Telecommunications disciplines on projects with engineers and specialists.
  • Plans, develops, coordinates design works.
  • Manages design registers, meeting minutes, drawing registers and project requirements.
  • Ensure formal communication is undertaken and managed (RFIs, TQs, EWN’s, MAR’s).
  • Ensure design risk assessments are compliant with installation parameters.
  • Manages design resource allocations to meet programme dates and demobilisations.
  • Prepares hour estimates and work plans in line with scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Prepares Design Management Plan and inputs to Project Execution Plans.
  • Maintains contacts with Client representatives, Suppliers, Construction Managers, and other Consultants/Contractors.
  • Coordinates with Client representatives to obtain phase approvals.
  • Undertaking electrical and mechanical design review to ensure buildability and constructability.
  • Identify weaknesses or errors that could jeopardise functionality and ensure HSE best practices.
  • Promotes value engineering at early design stages to reduce costs while increasing functionality.
  • Leads procurement support engineering activities including evaluation of supplier offers.
  • Ensures compliance with Design Management and Assurance Procedures and Quality Management System Procedures.
  • Works with Commercial Discipline to track design change and variances.
  • Plans design works with planning department and provides forecast readjustments to maintain programme.
  • Fosters a work environment with leadership, openness, trust, teamwork and innovation.
  • Manages Subcontractor/Sub-consultant works and assists in valuation and contract support.
  • Familiar with BIM/IM and 3D modelling management, CDE workflows.

Job description

The Design Manager will supervise the design activity (Mechanical, Electrical, Public Health, Fire and Telecommunications) on a medium to larger size project(s) within Power, Utilities, Infrastructure projects. The role will involve the planning and direction of design and engineering assignments on the project. Technical responsibilities include interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating these assignments. The Design Manager will manage the design work of a group of Engineers, both within VVB and the ‘supply chain’; and supports tendering, procurement, and construction activities. They will represent the design on the project, and with the Client as the delegated focal point of contact to resolve technical queries.

Responsibilities
  • Supervises the design activities Mechanical, Electrical, Public Health, Fire and Telecommunications disciplines) on a project performed by group of engineers including discipline engineers, specialists, BIM and CAD.
  • Plans, develops, coordinates design works.
  • Management of all associated design registers, meeting minutes, drawing registers etc.as appropriate in line with VVB and project requirements.
  • Ensure all formal communication is undertaken and managed (RFI’s, TQ’s, EWN’s, MAR’s etc.)
  • Ensure design risk assessments are compliant with the installation parameters.
  • Manages design resource allocations to meet programme/schedule dates and demobilisations.
  • Prepares hour estimates and work plans in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly.
  • Prepares Design Management Plan and provides input to Project Execution Plans.
  • Maintains contacts with Client representatives as required, with Suppliers, Construction Managers, and other Consultants/Contractors as part of interface management to ensure the coordination of the work within the project or assignment and compliance with VVB and the Client requirements.
  • Coordinates with Client representatives as delegated to obtain their approval on phases of work.
  • Undertaking electrical and mechanical design review in line with current standards to ensure buildability and constructability. Identify any weakness or errors in the engineering and design that could jeopardise the functionality and ensures HSE best practices are always followed.
  • Ensures that value engineering is considered at the beginning of each engineering and design stage to explore the opportunities to reduce costs but increase functionality to increase the value of a design.
  • Experience in leading procurement support engineering activities including approval of technical bid evaluation of Supplier/Vendor offers performed by discipline engineers.
  • Ensures compliance with VVB’s Design Management and Assurance Procedures and Quality Management System Procedures.
  • Working with the Commercial Discipline to track design change and variances.
  • Working with the planning department to plan design works. Provision of accurate assessment on forecast works to complete and provide suitable readjustments to ensure project programme is maintained.
  • Promotes the creation of a work environment, supported by leadership, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
  • Management of Subcontractor/Sub-consultant’s works as appropriate including assisting Commercial Discipline in valuation and contract support.
  • Fully conversant in BIM/IM – including the management of 3D modelling, TIDP/BEP etc, co-ordination, BIM Level 3 working, CDE management and workflows.
